Robert Irwin’s relationship with his mother, Terri Irwin, has been spotlighted in recent weeks as he competes on “Dancing with the Stars” Season 34. The most emotional moment happened during Week 5 for Dedication Night, when Robert’s emotional performance alongside professional dancer Witney Carson left fans and judges in tears.
Robert has publicly praised his mother for her strength and resilience, and it is clear he admires her greatly. Terri raised her children, Robert and his older sister, Bindi Irwin, on her own after the tragic and unexpected passing of their father, Steve Irwin, on September 4, 2006. However, she did have the support of many wonderful people, including Russell Crowe, whose inclusion in Robert’s life may come as a surprise to some fans.
Robert Irwin & Terri Irwin Wow on the Red Carpet

Robert and Terri were recently photographed at the 2025 AFI FEST in California on Friday, October 24. They both looked great and were all smiles as they posed for photos. They were there in support of their friend Crowe, whose film, “Nuremberg,” was premiering at the event.
Robert looked great in a classic monochromatic combination: a black suit and crisp white shirt, which he left unbuttoned for a more relaxed finish. He paired his look with white sneakers for a casual yet undeniably cool look.

Terri looked stunning in a brown suit and comfortable bronze flats. She wore her hair loose and smiled for the cameras.

Robert Irwin’s Bond With Russell Crowe

At the event, Robert revealed the special bond he shares with Crowe and how he has helped him keep his father’s memory alive. “I’ve known him for as long as I’ve been alive,” Robert told People. “I have some very early memories, actually. Some of the earliest memories of me with my dad were also with Russell, which is really special.”
He continued, “I’m really grateful that I have someone in my life who … he’s actually been there to, in a way, keep my dad alive in my life. He has so many stories to share of him and dad, and I feel like I build an even better picture of my dad when I’m around Russell.”
In the interview, Robert also shared something that not everyone would remember, but his dad and Crowe were “great mates.” Speaking of their bond, the wildlife conservationist said that Crowe brought a “different perspective” to his memories of his father. “It’s meaningful. He’s someone that I look up to and has truly inspired me.”

Crowe and Steve also appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” together on November 6, 2003.
