‘Modern Family’ Star Reveals the Truth About Their Jaw-Dropping Transformation

When you think about Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, you likely recall her role as Lily on “Modern Family,” which is currently streaming on Disney+. However, these days, she’s not only pivoted to music, but she also underwent a major transformation that surprised her fans, to say the least. While the star definitely looked fabulous with her new look, she’s now revealed a truth about the unexpected change.

On Friday, August 21, Anderson-Emmons shared a video on Instagram, that showed her getting ready. It also showed her with both blonde hair and brown hair. The actress and musician included text over the video, admitting, “I’ve been lying to you guys…”

In a voiceover, she explained that she’s “actually brunette right now” despite recently sharing that she had gone very blonde. Indeed, in the new recording she can be seen brushing and styling her hair, which is back to her natural brown shade.

Assuring her followers that the lighter hair color wasn’t the result of a wig, she told those who were watching that she “was blonde for the majority of June.” However, a project then popped up and it meant that she had to go back to a darker shade of hair.

Although she can’t reveal too many details about what that project happened to be, she did say that she was gone for a month — and that she was living in the middle of nowhere, which she happened to enjoy — and that’s why she added a note in the caption of her post, saying, “yayy I’m back home!”

The post prompted plenty of comments from the star’s followers, with one person writing, “Welcome back queen 😍😍”

“I’m happy your hair didn’t get fried from the blonde era 💛🤎 it looks so soft and healthy,” came from another fan.

On top of the compliments, someone else asked, “Is this project modern family related[?]”

What Is Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Doing Now?

While Anderson-Emmons’ fans would obviously love to see her back onscreen with her “Modern Family” co-stars, she’s actually focusing on something different these days.

The actress was just 4 years old when she joined “Modern Family” in the third season of the award-winning comedy series, and was 12 years old when the show wrapped up in 2020. After the series ended, the COVID-19 pandemic soon forced the country into lockdown, which gave the young star an opportunity to teach herself to play the guitar and start making her own music.

In August 2025, People reported that Anderson-Emmons had taken on a new professional name, Frances Anderson (FYI: Francis is her middle name), and was releasing her debut EP, “Drown,” while mentioning the fact that the changes that she’s embracing “indicate a new era” for the multitalented performer.

With her EP featuring five tracks that explore both her childhood and the changes she’s experiencing in her life, she told People, “It’s coming of age. I wanted to be truthful for who I am and not who I played on TV.”
