The New York Jets honored Mangold following news of his passing, posting a long message on social media, which included statements from numerous team executives.
“Today, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of one of the greatest to ever wear the green and white – Nick Mangold,” Jets Chairman Robert Wood Johnson said. “
Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
Mangold passed away due to complications from kidney disease after having shared more information about his battle earlier this month. Specifically, he wrote a letter to fans, revealing that he had started dialysis treatments while waiting for a kidney transplant.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote in a message addressed to “My NY Jets community.” “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”

May he rest in peace. So young. My heart and prayers go out to his family.
