Valerie Bertinelli has overcome a lot in her lifetime, including body shame and insecurity. The beloved “One Day at a Time” alum opened up about letting go of her negative thoughts about her body.
“Would I like my body to be more taut and not have this?” the Food Network star, 65, joked in an interview with People, as she showed her upper arms. “Of course. But I am in my sixties.”
Valerie Bertinelli on Overcoming Body Shame
Bertinelli sat down for an in-depth interview with People ahead of the release of her new book, “Getting Naked.” The Emmy Award-winning host posed nude for the cover of her book, proving that she is comfortable and confident in her body.
“You know what? My body goes up and down stairs. Downstairs hurts a little bit more. But I can carry my 35-pound dog [Luna] when she has an amputation [to remove a cancerous mass,]” she told People in an interview published Wednesday, March 4. “And I can stand watching my son for two hours on stage — and it’s heaven.”
She explained that she prefers to stay off the scale, but when she does, she doesn’t “drive [herself] crazy” over the number.
“Being told all those things. ‘Your body isn’t perfect enough. You’re still not 110 pounds.’ Well, who could be 110 pounds? Yes at 15, but no, I’ll never see that weight again, and I don’t need to. Because that’s underweight,” Bertinelli added.
“I lost way too much weight in 2024 because I was so stressed out that I never want to be that weight again either,” she continued. “I’m finally at a comfortable place where my clothes fit. They’re not too big. They’re not too small. I’m just normal. Even though I have a little pooch, who cares?”
Why Valerie Bertinelli Posed Nude for Her Book Cover
The “Hot in Cleveland” star explained her decision to strip down for the cover of her memoir in a video shared via Instagram.
“At this age, if I can look that good, I’m like…do it!” she said. “Because that feels really good. And I don’t know what I’m going to look like when I’m 80. But at 65, it looks pretty [expletive] good.”
Bertinelli continued, “I don’t think that’s arrogant. I think you’re allowed to feel good about yourself. I have felt bad about myself for too many decades. I’m gonna feel good about myself now.”
