The Story Behind Shields’ Haircare Company Commence
GettyShields’ striking eyebrows and voluminous hairdo have been iconic since her early days in the spotlight. She began Commence specifically for women over 40.
The story behind her brand Commence reads as such on their official website, “As someone who’s been in the public eye since her first modeling gig at 11 months old, Brooke Shields knows what it’s like to age in front of an audience—and she’s not afraid to tell it like it is. Our founder and CEO developed this collection for women over 40 who know that their best hair—and their most exciting new beginnings—lie ahead.”
“This woman wants to spend on herself, she’s in an age now where life is starting to become more about her again because her kids are going away,” Shields told Shop TODAY during an interview from December 2025. “And I think [brands] didn’t know what to necessarily do, and so they just picked that extreme and this extreme — and we see that in almost every medium. There’s this bracket in the middle that needed to be heard and paid attention to. They’re ready to talk and listen and ask, and they want problems solved.”
She explained that our hair starts to change at that age “and we need to address it without being shamed.”
