Security Heats Up on ‘Harry Potter’ HBO Set Amid Threats on Star’s Life

HBO has stepped up security around its upcoming “Harry Potter” reboot after one of the show’s stars began receiving disturbing online threats. Paapa Essiedu, the Ghanaian-English actor cast as Professor Severus Snape, said he has faced backlash and threatening messages since joining the series. Network executives said they expected strong reactions from fans and put safety measures in place early to protect the cast.

Paapa Essiedu Addresses Threats Linked to ‘Harry Potter’ Casting

Essiedu, who was cast as Professor Severus Snape in 2025, said he has received threatening messages online since taking on the role.

In an interview with The Times, Essiedu shared examples of the messages he has seen on social media.

“I’ve been told, ‘Quit, or I’ll murder you,’” Essiedu said. “The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’”

He explained that the constant messages can be emotionally difficult, even while he continues working on the show.

“While I hope I’ll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job,” Essiedu said. “Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in ‘Harry Potter’. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”

Despite the threats, Essiedu said he has not reported individual messages to authorities.

“I don’t think some 17-year-old boy being put in jail for two weeks for threatening to murder me would actually make me feel any better,” he added.

Essiedu’s casting drew strong reactions from some fans because the character of Severus Snape was portrayed by Alan Rickman in the original “Harry Potter” films. Rickman played the role throughout the film series.

HBO Confirms Security Measures on ‘Harry Potter’ HBO Series

HBO executives confirmed that the studio expected intense fan reactions tied to the major franchise.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, told Variety that the company put safeguards in place early in production.

“With all actors on any kind of big IP shows — and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got, you know, passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions — it can get scary in places,” Bloys said.

He explained that the network has developed security procedures and guidance for actors working on major projects.

“So for any show like that, we anticipated it and tried to have training, you know, best practices in terms of social media and how to handle it,” Bloys said. “And obviously we’ve got a serious security team. So unfortunately, it was something that we thought might happen and we just try to be as careful as we can.”

The upcoming HBO series will reimagine J.K. Rowling’s seven “Harry Potter” novels for television. Each season will adapt one book from the series.

‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ HBO Series Shares First Look

HBO recently released a first trailer for the reboot, offering viewers a glimpse at the new cast and storyline.

The series follows young wizard Harry Potter as he learns about the magical world and attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

In the trailer, Harry is introduced while living with the Dursley family before receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts.

“You are a normal boy, and you’re going to start acting like one,” Aunt Petunia Dursley, played by Bel Powley, tells him in the preview.

The trailer also shows Harry meeting Rubeus Hagrid, played by Nick Frost.

“They were funny and clever and they stood up for what they believed was right,” Hagrid tells Harry while discussing his parents.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter in the series, taking over the role originally played by Daniel Radcliffe in the films. Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, while Alastair Stout portrays Ron Weasley.

Additional cast members include Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall.

Bloys told Variety that casting for Lord Voldemort has not yet been finalized.

The series adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.

    • You should be sick of the white racism; yet here you are. Just don’t watch the show. So what if there is a black character recast in the place of a white one. Grow up!
