The Quidditch pitch just told us everything we needed to know.
On March 24, HBO dropped the first official photo from its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and the internet immediately caught fire. The image, shared on the show’s official Instagram account (@harrypotter), arrives years into the making of what HBO has called its most ambitious undertaking yet. If you have been following everything we know about the Harry Potter series, you knew this moment was coming.
One detail hidden in the background says more about this show than any press release ever could. Look closely, and Hogwarts is already speaking the language of the books.
What the Photo Actually Shows
The image centers on Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, shot from behind as he strides toward the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch. He wears a scarlet and gold Gryffindor cloak with “POTTER 7” stitched across the back, his Nimbus 2000 broomstick at his side. Snow covers the ground. A crowd of Hogwarts students presses forward ahead of him.
The banners overhead show Gryffindor and Hufflepuff house colors. But tucked into the upper right corner is the detail fans are responding to most: a banner bearing the names “Fred and George.” The Weasley twins are not yet central figures in the Philosopher’s Stone, yet HBO chose to place them in the very first image released. It is a direct nod to the books, a quiet signal that this Harry Potter TV series intends to honor J.K. Rowling’s world in full.
HBO captioned the post with a single word. “Tomorrow,” followed by a lightning bolt emoji, confirming a trailer drop was imminent.
The Team and Cast Bringing This World to Life
GettyThis HBO Harry Potter series has been in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. since July 2025. The same studio complex where the original Harry Potter movies were brought to life now houses the next chapter. Production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, known for “Interview With the Vampire” and “Pachinko,” is responsible for the visual world fans are now seeing take shape.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner leads the Harry Potter show alongside director Mark Mylod, the Emmy-winning duo behind HBO’s Succession. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and David Heyman serve as executive producers. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is scoring the series.
McLaughlin was selected from over 32,000 hopefuls in an open global casting call. Joining him are Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The adult ensemble includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Read the full cast guide right here.
The Harry Potter HBO premiere is set for 2027 on HBO and Max, with each of the seven seasons adapting one of Rowling’s novels.
