What Is ‘Rock the Block’?
For seven seasons, teams of HGTV stars have competed in renovation challenges. Each team is tasked with renovating an identical home on the same block, “transforming them into custom luxury homes with a set budget.”
The current season — hosted by longtime HGTV favorite Ty Pennington — introduced a new twist. Celebrity designers are paired with HGTV pros as they take on Las Vegas homes larger than 5,000 square feet. With a budget of $275,000, the duos compete in weekly challenges, completing one area of the home at a time.
The teams are Scott McGillivray and Brooke Hogan, Taniya Nayak and former 98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey, “Good Bones” alum Mina Starsiak Hawk and NFL great Vernon Davis, and Kim Wolfe and Chelsea Meissner.
“This is a genius idea. When I first heard, I was like, ‘What? How is this going to work when they’ve never met each other before?’ Maybe it’s Season 7, and seven is a lucky number when we’re in Vegas,” Pennington told TV Insider ahead of the Season 7 premiere. “But I’ll tell you this season of Rock the Block is big. It’s exciting, it’s flamboyant. It’s like Vegas itself. It’s a big show. Maybe it’s because the HGTV stars are working with reality stars. In many ways, they are just stars.”
‘Rock the Block’ Season 7
With four weeks and four challenges already completed, week five saw the team renovate their home’s RV garage.
Scott and Brooke are at the top of the leaderboard going into week 5. The duo previously won week 1’s bedroom, bathroom, and closet challenge, as well as the kitchen and dining space renovation during week 3.
Week 2’s foyer, great room, and den challenge went to Kim and Chelsea, while Taniya and Drew won week 4’s multi-gen suite renovation.
Mina and Vernon remain the only team who have not taken home a win thus far.
“I’m the only person in Rock the Block history that’s never won a weekly challenge or the final,” she said during her recent appearance on Alison Victoria’s “Pap Smear” podcast. “It’s been a lot of pressure.”
Who Won ‘Rock the Block’ Week 5?
The teams duked it out with their RV garage renovations during the Monday, May 11, episode.
The three spaces being renovated this week were the “essential spaces,” according to Pennington.
Mina Starsiak Hawk finally earned her first “Rock the Block” win!
Spending a majority of their budget on the RV garage paid off for Starsiak Hawk and Davis. The duo transformed the space into a functional apartment, adding immense value to their home.
The winning pair decided to put their $3,000 prize into next week’s design budget.
