Mike Wolfe is opening up about his deep and complex friendship with the late Frank Fritz, his longtime “American Pickers” co-star and companion on decades of adventures, clarifying the truth behind their relationship following Fritz’s passing in 2024.
Wolfe Recalls Their Bond
In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, the HISTORY channel star described his bond with Fritz as a “once in a lifetime friendship,” emphasizing that reports of a feud in later years stemmed largely from misunderstandings related to Fritz’s personal struggles — particularly his battle with opioid addiction following back surgery.
Wolfe made a point of rejecting the idea that their relationship was defined by conflict, saying that the two “loved each other like brothers.”
The pair first teamed up on “American Pickers” when the show premiered in 2010, traveling the country in search of antiques and building a loyal fanbase over more than a decade.
Their chemistry was often cited as a central part of the show’s success, rooted in genuine affection and decades of friendship even before the cameras rolled.
However, Fritz left the series in 2021, and in the years that followed, there were public perceptions of distance between them.
At the time, many reports suggested they had become estranged, with Fritz himself saying they hadn’t spoken in years.
Fritz Struggled With His Health
But Wolfe now says part of that narrative emerged from Fritz’s health challenges and personal choices at the time — not a lack of affection.
Wolfe also detailed his final moments with Fritz following a debilitating stroke, recalling how he visited him at a nursing facility where Fritz could “barely speak.”
Rather than dwelling on the difficulties, Wolfe chose to focus on what he described as beautifully human moments: sharing photos, reminiscing about past picks and accomplishments, shedding “a lot of tears,” and finding space for laughter amidst the pain.
“I wanted him to know how much I loved him,” Wolfe said, highlighting how important those closing moments were for both men.
He pointed to the shared history they built — from road trips and treasure hunts to the cultural impact of their show — as the real legacy of their partnership.
Even as “American Pickers” continues with new co-hosts, and as fans remember Fritz for his sharp humor and passion for picking, Wolfe’s reflections reinforce the unique bond that sustained them through both triumph and adversity.
His words paint a picture of friendship that went far beyond television — a connection forged in years of shared experiences, mutual respect and genuine love that endured until the end.
