Legendary EGOT Winner to Receive Major Honor at Cannes Film Festival

An iconic EGOT winner will make her Cannes debut this year. That’s because she’s set to accept a lifetime achievement honor at the 79th Festival de Cannes awards ceremony. The icon in question? None other than the legendary singer, actress, songwriter, producer, and director Barbra Streisand.

For anyone not in the know, the acronym “EGOT” applies to anyone who’s won all four of the prestigious Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards. Streisand, 83, is set to add to her incredible list of accolades as the recipient of an honorary Palme d’Or in recognition of her life’s work.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cannes unveiled the news of Streisand’s award on Wednesday, March 11. In doing so, they referred to the superstar as “an iconic artist and embodiment of the American dream in all its original splendor.”

The awards ceremony will take place on May 23. Streisand has expressed her thoughts on receiving the honor at the event.

The brilliant Barbra Streisand released a statement about her upcoming award. It said, “It is with a sense of pride and deep humility, that I’m honored to join the company of past Honorary Palme d’or recipients whose work has long inspired me.”

She added, “In these challenging times, movies have the ability to open our hearts and minds to stories that reflect our shared humanity, and to perspectives that remind us of both our fragility and our resilience. Cinema transcends borders and politics, and affirms the power of imagination to shape a more compassionate world.”

Streisand has never had a film play in Cannes before. Therefore, her Croisette debut will come in typically flamboyant fashion, collecting her award on stage this year.

Per IMDb, Barbra Streisand’s list of awards is among the most impressive in all of showbusiness.

Two of Streisand’s four Primetime Emmys were in 1995 for her “Barbra Streisand: The Concert” tour. They were Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Directing for a Variety or Music Program. Her others were for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Entertainment for 1965’s television special “My Name Is Barbra,” and Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for her 2001 live album “Barbra Streisand: Timeless.”

She’s won no less than ten Grammy Awards, which culminated in her winning the 1995 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her two Academy Awards came in the form of a Best Actress gong for 1968’s biographical musical movie “Funny Girl” and a Best Original Song award for “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born)” from 1976’s musical romantic drama film “A Star Is Born.”

Streisand’s solitary Tony Award came in 1970. Back then, she received the Star of the Decade award for her contribution to Broadway theater in the 1960s.

Additionally, she has won an American Film Institute Award, a Directors Guild of America Award, nine Golden Globe Awards, and three Peabody Awards. There are many other awards in her collection, too.

We’d like to send Barbra Streisand our heartfelt congratulations. Suffice it to say, her receiving of an honorary Palme d’Or is richly deserved.
