Just two days after gunfire erupted outside Pop Star and fashion Icon Rihanna’s Los Angeles home, a newly filed criminal complaint is shedding more light on what prosecutors describe as a calculated act. As per the report accessed by People, the complaint alleges that the shooting was “willful, deliberate, and premeditated.”
Attempted Murder Charge Filed in Shooting at Rihanna’s Home
Filed March 10, the document charges Ivanna Ortiz, 35, of Florida, in connection with the March 8 incident. Prosecutors allege Ortiz traveled to the residence in an “attempt to murder” Robyn Fenty, using the singer’s legal name in court filings.
GettyOrtiz faces one count of attempted murder. She has also been charged with 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper, according to the complaint.
If convicted as charged, Ortiz could face up to life in state prison.
District Attorney Explains the 10 Assault Charges
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman spoke about the case during a Tuesday news conference, explaining why prosecutors filed multiple assault charges.
“In that residence, Rihanna was there with her partner, her three children, her mother, and two staff people representing eight of the 10 of the counts of dealing with an assault with a semiautomatic firearm,” Hochman said, referencing A$AP Rocky and the couple’s children.
“In addition, Miss Ortiz is accused of firing at a neighboring residence that had two additional individuals,” Hochman added. “That is why there are 10 felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.”
GettyHochman later highlighted the gravity of the allegations in a written statement.
“Opening fire in any populated neighborhood is extremely dangerous, puts lives at risk, and will be fully prosecuted,” he wrote. “Thankfully, no one was injured in this shooting, but this careless violence will not be tolerated in our community. Such shooters will find their next destination to be our jails and prisons.”
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Suspect Held on $1.8 Million Bail
Ortiz appeared in court Tuesday dressed in blue jail attire with her hair in braids, the Associated Press reported. Deputy Public Defender Jamarcus Bradford briefly entered a not guilty plea on her behalf before withdrawing it, opting to delay the arraignment until March 25.
A judge set Bail at $1.8 million. The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office confirmed it has been appointed to represent Ortiz in the case.
“Because this matter is pending before the Court, our Office cannot comment on the allegations at this time,” the office said in a statement, as reported by The New York Times. “As in every case, we will work to ensure that our client receives the full protections guaranteed under the Constitution.”
Background on the Accused & Online Posts
Ortiz is a Florida resident with a history of prior arrests, the Los Angeles Times reported. Public records show she has been licensed as a speech pathologist since 2024.
According to The New York Post, a Facebook account appearing to belong to Ortiz contains multiple posts referencing Rihanna. In one message dated February 23, the account reads, “say something to me directly instead of sneaking around like you talking to me.”
Authorities have not indicated whether Ortiz had any direct or personal connection to the singer.
A source previously described the incident as “terrifying” for Rihanna, but added that “thankfully everyone is safe.”
The investigation is ongoing.
