Famed Experimental Musician Passes Away at 46 & Tributes Pour In

Fans of synthwave are mourning the loss of James Cody Lollar, who passed away at 46. Notably, he was the man behind the GosT project. Specifically labeled as a darksynth, GosT is perhaps best known for songs such as “Cursed,” “Behemoth (Remix),” and “Maleficarum.” Now, fans are paying tribute to his legacy.

According to Revolver, Lollar’s management team, Bad Behavior, confirmed his passing on April 2 after the musician died the previous day.

They said in a statement, “The whole GOST team is incredibly saddened to inform you that James Cody Lollar, known as GOST, passed away yesterday. We are sending all our prayers to his family and friends during this time of grief. He will be remembered as a wonderful human being and a tremendously talented artist.”

It continued, “We kindly ask that everyone respect the privacy of his loved ones during these difficult times. He will be deeply missed by all.”


Tributes Are Pouring In For James Cody Lollar, GosT

Lollar is considered a trailblazer in the horror-infused darksynth subgenre of synthwave music. Because of this, many of his fans are paying tribute to his legacy on social media.

One X account posted, “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of James Cody Lollar, known to everyone as GOST. We will terribly miss your energy, your creativity, and your warmth. The Non Paradisi Prophecy can now be fulfilled, as we know you are already ruling the other realms. We love you.”

Someone else said, “James Cody Lollar (GOST) passed away. Sad day for the synthwave/darksynth community. Blast his music today.”

One fan said on Facebook, “Honestly, his music has been a crucial part of my life since I discovered Behemoth. Truly changed my life.”

Another person stated, “I just listened to Gost yesterday, love their music, and theyโ€™ve been a big influence on my recent music career as well. It seems like a cruel joke that theyโ€™d pass on april fools day, but itโ€™s never funny when someone passesโ€ฆrest in peace.”

Lastly, someone else wrote, “Met the guy at one of his shows a couple years back, super nice and down to earth. I’ve seen a lot of live shows, and GOST had a certain rawness to it. I’ll never forget seeing him play Ligature Marks and that gnarly scream. A truly unfortunate passing RIP.”


His Legacy Will Live On

Lollar built quite a career for himself with GosT, which, according to Consequence, he launched in 2013. Currently, the band’s official Spotify account has more than 119.6k monthly listeners. Throughout Lollar’s career, GosT released several projects, including “Skull” in 2013 and “Bohemoth” in 2015.

According to Spotify listings, GosT released 8 studio albums, with the latest being 2024’s “Prophecy.” He will be missed.
