Earth, Wind & Fire’s John Paris is in a Coma, Per Official Update, But Woke Briefly to Say 4 Words to His Family

One week after a medical emergency involving Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris caused the legendary R&B group to cancel its San Francisco concert with their co-headliner, Lionel Richie, it’s been revealed that Paris, 58, is in a medically induced coma.

On August 13, 2026, the “official update” came from the Standing for John Paris Facebook page, created by Shelly Clark White, wife of EWF co-founder Verdine White, to provide fans with updates on Paris and bring together “those who love & support him.”

Before EWF and Richie were scheduled to perform at San Francisco’s Chase Center on August 6, Paris was rushed to the hospital after the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a “cardiac incident” and transported Paris to a local hospital in critical condition, according to TMZ.

Fans and friends are rallying around Paris and his family now that more details have been revealed, including a brief moment when he woke up from his coma. In addition, a fundraiser has been created to help his family.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s John Paris Spoke Briefly When Awakened From His Coma & Made Everyone in the Room Laugh

According to Shelly White’s August 13 update, EWF’s manager Toshi was with Paris during his medical emergency. She noted that “her steady presence, care, and support during those first moments meant more than words can express, and the family will always be grateful.”

When Paris arrived at the hospital, “doctors placed him into an induced coma,” White wrote, and his wife Kathy and daughter Kyla rushed to be by his side. The highlight of the past week was when Paris opened his eyes briefly — a moment “no one in the room will ever forget,” White wrote.

White wrote that Paris “looked around the room and quietly asked, ‘Where’s Kathy?’ Once he saw her, you could feel the relief that swept through everyone. Then he looked over at Eddie with that wonderfully wicked sense of humor that everyone who knows John has come to love and said, ‘Get me outta here man!'”

“For a few precious moments, everyone saw the John they know and love,” White told fans in her update. “There were tears, laughter, hugs, and renewed hope.”

Unfortunately, Paris’ consciousness was short-lived, she noted, revealing that the beloved musician’s blood pressure began to rise and he struggled to breathe, so doctors made “the difficult decision to sedate him again” as they decide their best course of action moving forward.

Earth, Wind & Fire Fans Support John Paris & His Family

White launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Paris’ family, who live in Los Angeles, manage the costs of travel and lodging to be with him in San Francisco, and the expense of ongoing medical interventions moving forward.

“For decades, John Paris has been the heartbeat behind countless unforgettable performances with Earth, Wind & Fire,” White wrote in a heartfelt plea for support. As of August 13, nearly $69,000 had been raised.

Fans and famous friends have been rallying around Paris with prayers and social media posts, too. Famed drummer Sheila E. posted a video on August 10, calling him her “dear, dear friend,” and thanking fans for praying so hard and being so supportive of him and his family.

There’s been an outpouring of love from fans on social media for Paris, who joined EFW in 2001, including over a thousand comments on White’s update on his condition.

“There’s an inner Spirit in this Musician that just will not quit,” one fan wrote. “He is saying from within pause, I’m just getting by timing RIGHT !! THE return will be worth the wait.”
