Lionel Richie’s tour stop at the Chase Center with Earth, Wind & Fire was reportedly canceled last minute on Thursday, August 6, after a medical emergency.
According to PEOPLE, moments before taking the stage for their joint Sing a Song All Night Long Tour, a band member, who remains unnamed, suffered a medical mishap.
Following the unexpected cancellation, Earth, Wind & Fire shared a statement on Instagram apologizing to fans and urging them to keep their tickets for a postponed show at a later date.
Medical Emergency Forces Lionel Richie to Cancel Show
“We are unable to perform as scheduled tonight at Chase Center in San Francisco due to a medical emergency involving a member of our band. As a result, tonight’s show with Lionel Richie will be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced soon,” the statement said.
“Ticket holders should retain their tickets, which will be honored for the new date, or refunds will be available at the point of purchase,” the statement continued. “We sincerely apologize for the unexpected change and appreciate everyone’s understanding.”
The postponed performance comes just weeks after Richie, 77, was forced to reschedule two tour dates in June following medical concerns.
The “American Idol” judge left the stage early on June 24 in St. Paul, Minn., after feeling dizzy during his performance for “Dancing on the Ceiling.” After sitting down on stage in an attempt to gather himself, Richie made his exit and called an intermission. Not more than an hour later, saxophonist Dino Soldo told the crowd that the “Stuck on You” singer would be unable to continue with the concert.
Lionel Richie Postpones 2 Tour Stops
GettyRichie’s medical scare struck during the opening night of his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. He was soon hospitalized and treated for fatigue.
In a statement from Live Nation Chicago, it was shared that Richie was advised by doctors to postpone his two shows on June 26 and 27.
“Under advisement by doctors to rest and return to full health, Lionel Richie has postponed his next two shows on Friday, June 26 in Chicago, IL and Saturday, June 27 in Columbus, OH. He and Earth, Wind & Fire will return to the stage on Tuesday, June 30 in Pittsburgh, PA,” the statement said.
“Lionel is heartbroken to postpone these two shows and cannot wait to be back performing for his fans,” the statement continued. “We apologize for any inconvenience this causes fans who have tickets for these two shows. Rescheduled dates will be announced soon.”
Following growing concern for his health, Richie reassured fans in an Instagram statement on July 4 that he was on the mend and looking forward to continuing his tour.
“Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. ❤️ I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you,” he wrote.
Despite ongoing medical issues, Richie’s Sing a Song All Night Long Tour is expected to continue through its last show on August 14 in Austin, Texas.
