Mariah Carey had a big announcement for her fans when she took the stage at the 2025 Video Music Awards on September 7.
The “We Belong Together” singer said onstage that her new album will be out in two weeks! Carey shared the news while accepting her Video Vanguard award.
Ariana Grande showered Carey with praise while introducing her. She called the icon “the reason why so many of us here sing,” before adding, “She is the one and only Mariah Carey.”
Grande has long spoken of Carey as one of her biggest musical inspirations. Elle says she gushed in 2020, “My sound was so influenced by her and the 1990s pop sound. The fact that she thought of me is very soul-shaking. You know what I mean? It just means a lot, as an artist and a fan.” The reaction came after Carey invited Grande to appear in a video for her iconic Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” featuring various artists dancing to the track.
Mariah Carey Expressed Gratitude for Video Vanguard Award Earlier in the Day
Prior to the show, Mariah Carey took to her Instagram to thank MTV for the honor of the Video Vanguard Award. She wrote, “They swung it on home! Thank you @mtv for honoring me with the Video Vanguard Award this year. See you all tonight!”
As fans know, Carey was a staple on MTV in the channel’s heyday when it was best known for playing music videos.
Fans Reacted to Mariah Carey’s Video Vanguard Award
Carey’s fan, who call themselves “Lambs,” flooded her Instagram comments with love. One wrote, “Finally the credit you deserve! Your videos are iconic!”
Another chimed in, “This is superstar quality work! Love it way too much. Congratulations Diva Mimi!”
Page Six says in her acceptance speech, the mom of two jokingly called out MTV, saying, “I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight,” before asking the station what they were waiting for.
The pop diva continued, “I’m kidding. I love you every day. I love you so much.”
The outlet says the 2025 ceremony was Carey’s first VMA appearance in 20 years. The vocalist appeared in 2005 to perform her songs “We Belong Together” and “Shake It Off.”
Carey was previously nominated for seven awards, but lost each time. Fans considered several of the snubs surprising, given the star’s dominant career. In 2022, 95.7 BIG FM says Carey joked about the situation in a Tweet, writing, “Yeah @MTV how have I offended thee? Nary an award?”
