Less than six months after the loss of icon Ozzy Osbourne, another British rocker is gone too soon. Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, a talented guitarist and co-founding member of the English rock band Black Midi, has passed away at 26.
Black Midi Guitarist’s Family Says He ‘Succumbed’ to Mental Health Battle
Independent record label Rough Trade Records posted a statement from the artist’s family on Monday, January 12. In it, they grieved the star and discussed mental health.
The statement reads:
“It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health. A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed, despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old. He will always be loved. Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men.”
The label gave more information in the post’s caption. They wrote, “Rough Trade Records would like to extend deepest sympathy to the Kwasniewski-Kelvin family who have shared this statement on the tragic passing of a found Black Midi member Matt – an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed.”
They continued, “If you are struggling with mental health issues please reach out to your loved ones or one of the range of charities such as Mind, CALM and Samaritans who provide services and someone to talk to in any time of need.”
Black Midi Fans Mourn Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin
In the comments of a Black Midi concert video from their Hyundai Mercury Prize performance in 2019, fans are fondly remembering the rocker.
One fan commented, “Back here after hearing about Matt’s passing. Gone way too soon, rest in peace.”
Another wrote, “RIP MATT KELVIN – Black MIDI single-handedly reignited my love for rock music and was also my introduction to experimental rock as a sub genre. This is the greatest band of all time, and Matt was such an important part of it. A huge loss for all. Rest In Peace.”
Others praised his unforgettable front flip he surprised fans with during the performance. One said, “He even timed that front flip with the beat of the lyrics with a concussion.”
Variety’s tribute to Kwasniewski-Kelvin touches on his lifelong love of music. The piece says the late star grew up playing guitar, and connected with future Black Midi members Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson while attending the BRIT School, a performing arts institution in London.

Not saying I’m not sorry he’s dead, didn’t know him. But that’s the point, you compared it to the death of Ozzy. What? Even president Trump and King Chuck Pt. 3 sent messages to Ozzy’s family, he’s iconic. Who was this other guy again???
