Popular ‘It Takes Two’ Rapper Passes Away at 59 as Tributes Pour In

Fans of late 1980s and 90s rap music are in mourning as Rob Base, one-half of the legendary duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away. The duo is known for several songs, most notably “It Takes Two” (1988). Now, tributes are pouring in from fans and industry colleagues. This comes after Rock passed away in 2014.

Base’s passing was confirmed via a statement posted to his social media accounts on May 22. It began, “Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer.”

It continued, “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world.” After that, Base was remembered as “a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”

The statement concluded, “Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives. Rest in Paradise, Rob Base.”


Tributes Are Pouring In For Rob Base

Base enjoyed decades of success while part of the beloved rap duo. This includes three studio albums and several popular songs. Of course, the two made several notable public appearances until 2014 when Rock passed away. Because of the group’s legacy, tributes are pouring in for Base.

One person on X reacted, saying, “Damn. Seeing Rob Base trending instantly took me back to The Wayside in Mount Pleasant, early ’90s. Sad to learn it’s for the worst reason. RIP.” Another fan wrote, “Godspeed, Rob Base. Rest easy knowing you’re forever cemented in as a huge piece of the history of Hip-Hop “It Takes Two” . Enjoy the cosmos.”

Legendary hip hop artist Flavor Flav also paid tribute to the “It Takes Two” rapper. He posted a photo to X, saying Rip Rob Base.”

Someone else noted his legacy. According to them, “RobBase will forever be a part of some of the best dance party memories! Thanks for the music! RIP.” Another person on X said, “I received a call earlier today…but couldn’t find anyone to verify it. I thought it was a mistake. Damn. I’m messed up by this. R.I.P Rob Base.”

Lastly, “RIP Rob Base. The man gave us one of the ultimate party anthems with “It Takes Two.” That track still lights up the dance floor decades later. Condolences to his family and the whole hip-hop community.”


The ‘It Takes Two’ Rapper’s Legacy Will Never Be Forgotten

Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock are cemented in music history. This is the case not only because of “It Takes Two,” but also because they are credited with influencing the fusion of hip hop and house music in the 1980s. According to Variety, the duo’s signature song sprang to number three on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart in 1988.

After that, they released the single “Get on the Dance Floor.” That song went to number one on the chart. Their first album, named for their biggest hit, peaked at number four on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In total, they have three studio albums, with the final, “Break of Dawn,” arriving in 1994.
