Netflix subscribers are in luck over the coming weeks as we draw into winter. There’s a whole host of new content coming as we head into the festive months and for fans of true crime documentaries, that’s even more true.
Netflix here’s a strong lineup of highly anticipated upcoming shows and already existing but equally as compelling true crime documentaries that will keep you occupied during your free time over the holidays.
Here are some of the best options coming soon.
‘A Deadly American Marriage’
“A Deadly American Marriage” arrived on Netflix earlier this year. The release follows the story of Irishman John Corbett, who moves to the United States after marrying Molly Martens, who was originally hired as a nanny for his children. With the help of her father, Tom Martens, Molly seemingly murders her husband after seven years of living in North Carolina, although there are plenty more twists and turns along the way that you won’t be able to see coming.
‘The Vow’
This series tracks the story of NXIVM, a supposed “self-improvement group” and wellness movement that was eventually uncovered to be a cult. Key figures Keith Raniere and Allison Mack were ultimately convicted of sex trafficking and other crimes after being found to have used the company as a front for their illicit activities. “The Vow” largely focuses on the victim, giving them a platform to tell their side and move on from the tragedy.
‘Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story’
This true crime documentary features the infamous British serial killers Fred and Rose West and the terrible crimes they committed in their home, which was later dubbed the “House of Horrors.”
Over the course of more than two decades, Fred and his wife brutally murdered many women and were also responsible for abusing their own children. Using unseen footage, interviews with experts and those involved in the case, and reconstructions, the documentary gives you a good account of exactly what the West couple did and an insight into their deprived motivations.
‘American Murder: Gabby Petito’
As the title suggests, this true crime documentary is focused on the murder of blogger Gabby Petito. The influencer was travelling across the country with her fiancé Brian Christopher Laundrie when she disappeared and was never heard from again. Laundrie ultimately became the prime suspect and the film delves into exactly what happened and how killed her before taking her own life.
“American Murder: Gabby Petito” takes viewers on a journey through every part of the investigation into her disappearance, from the official police case to the online sleuths who tried to track Petito down.
‘The Tinder Swindler’
“The Tinder Swindler” is the story of Simon Leviev – also known as Shimon Hayut – who operates a scam on ratings apps by tricking women into sending him large sums of money. Ultimately able to earn more than $10 million from his efforts, Leviev is brought down while the critically acclaimed documentary also looks at the role of ratings apps and the way they allow men to manipulate and abuse women.
‘The Jinx’
“The Jinx” is a compelling true crime documentary that follows the story of Robert Durst, a man suspected of killing several people over the course of several years, including his wife. While he was acquitted of one of the killings when he was eventually charged and sent to court, the story didn’t end there.
The evidence uncovered in the documentary led to his conviction in another murder, with the filmmakers examining thousands of files, interviewing witnesses, and conducting a thorough investigation. There’s also lots of frank and open interviews with Durst in conversation with director Andrew Jarecki. For those engrossed in the story, there’s a second season available that charts everything that happened from 2014 up to 2022.
