Outer Banks’ Chase Stokes Details the Scary On-Set Incident That Nearly Drowned Madison Bailey

Outer Banks’ Chase Stokes is leaving no Pogue behind, including Kiara Carrera.

Netflix’s hit teen adventure series’ lead, Chase Stokes, who played John B. Routledge, recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly for Lie v. Lie face off with Madison Bailey. While reminiscing about the show, Stokes detailed one of the terrifying on-set incident involving Madison Bailey’s near-drowning experience.

Thankfully, the 33-year-old actor quickly sensed the trouble, literally jumping in to rescue Bailey.

What Really Happened on the Sets of Outer Banks?

It all happened during the filming of an underwater scene for the Season 2 in Barbados. The sequence involved the character of JJ getting knocked off a boat, unconscious into the water, with Kiara holding him up. It was then that Stokes realized Madison, who played Kiara, had already been treading water even before the directors called action on the scene.

“I realized that I couldn’t see Bails’ face anymore,” Stokes remembered.

“It was really hard to communicate,” Stokes continued. “I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while.’ So I jumped off the boat and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater.”

Bailey, who was struggling, and “couldn’t swim closer to the boat,” had people wrongly believed she and Stokes were “committed” to the scene.

“Everyone thought it was like, ‘Oh, wow, they’re in the scene. This is great,’” Stokes explained. “I was like, ‘No, she’s drowning.’ I was like, ‘Hey, that’s not acting!’”

Bailey chimed in with laugh, “I was drowning. Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good.’”

Before opening up about the near-death incident, Stokes said “the underwater work” was the hardest part of filming Outer Banks. Recognizing swimming as Stokes’s strong suit, Bailey quipped, “You actually make a bad day worse. When I’m struggling to barely swim, Chase is like [fake swims]. I swear he’s breathing under there just to make me look bad.”

She even called him a “fish.”

Outer Bank Is Now Available on Netflix

The fifth and the final season for hit adventure series arrived this past Thursday on the streaming platform. The show casts Chase Stokes as John B. Routledge, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera, Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward, Carlacia Grant as Cleo Anderson, Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron, among others.

The show picks up right after the event of season 4, with the crew reeling from the tragic death of JJ Maybank in Morocco. The official Netflix synopsis reads: “On a North Carolina island of haves and have-nots, John B and his tight-knit crew of friends find mystery and adventure while hunting for lost treasure.”

The show currently sits at a 7.5 IMdb rating and is widely being praised for its eventful goodbye to the beloved characters.

As for whether we will ever see more from the world of Outer Banks, the answer is yes. Netflix is working on a spinoff prequel series tentatively titled Kildare, though details are still thin on the show.
