Beloved Martin Short’s History of Personal Loss Resurfaces After Daughter’s Tragic Passing

Martin Short has spent decades making audiences laugh. But behind the bright smile and quick timing is a life marked by repeated heartbreak. This week, that painful history resurfaced after the death of his eldest daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, who died by suicide at age 42 in Los Angeles.

The loss has brought renewed attention to the many tragedies the beloved actor has faced.

Martin Short Faced Family Tragedy Early, Losing Both Parents and a Brother

Short was born in Ontario, Canada, the youngest of five children. His first experience with grief came early. His eldest brother, David, died in a car accident when Short was just 12.

The losses continued during his teenage years. His mother, Olive, died of cancer when he was 17. Two years later, his father passed away following complications from a stroke. By age 20, Short had lost both parents.

In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on how those early experiences shaped him:

“All I know is that you only know your own life. At 20, I knew things about life and death and tragedy and loss that none of my friends knew about. I don’t know why this didn’t [expletive] me up.

“The only thing I can think of is that these kind of life stresses either empower you or defeat you. But I think that by surviving all that and continuing on, I developed muscles to handle the disappointments in life.

“And I do think, in a weird way, it did make me braver as a performer, braver onstage.

“I’d try something, and if some people didn’t like it, I didn’t care because I didn’t know them. I was never doing this for the admiration of strangers. I was doing this to make my siblings and my friends laugh.”

Actor Martin Short and his wife Nancy Dolman arrive at the opening night of “The Odd Couple” at the Brooks Atkinson Theater October 27, 2005 in New York City.

Short met actress Nancy Dolman in 1972. They married in 1980 and created a life centered on family, eventually adopting three children: Henry, Katherine, and Oliver.

Dolman chose to step back from acting to raise their children. Short would later call their marriage a triumph and one of the great blessings of his life.

In 2010, Dolman died following a battle with ovarian cancer. They had shared 30 years of marriage. In his memoir, Short described losing her as “by far the most awful thing I’ve been through.”

Reflecting on grief in a 2019 interview with AARP magazine, he said:

“With real tragedy, you become a little more daring. It’s the yin to the yang: the positive part of life’s dark side.”

In the years since her passing, Short has spoken about still feeling close to Dolman, saying he continues to sense her presence and carry their bond with him.

Mourning Close Friends Diane Keaton, Rob Reiner, and Catherine O’Hara

Beyond family, Short has also endured the deaths of close friends in recent years.

After the passing of Catherine O’Hara, he honored her during a live show, raising a glass in tribute:

“Catherine O’Hara, I met when she was 18 years of age,” Short said, as reported by Variety.

“And all these years later, she had been the greatest, most brilliant, kindest, sweetest angel that any of us worked with. So, God bless Catherine.”

Short also joined friends in honoring director Rob Reiner following his death in December 2025. In a joint statement, published by The Hollywood Reporter, they remembered his craft and spirit:

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant. For the actors, he loved them. For the writers, he made them better.”

“From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentar,y he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.”

The Unimaginable Loss of Daughter Katherine

Now, Short faces another deeply personal tragedy.

Katherine Hartley Short died at her Los Angeles home. She was 42. Representatives confirmed the news in a statement to TMZ, asking for privacy as the family grieves.

The loss has prompted an outpouring of support from fans, many of whom are reflecting on the strength Short has shown through decades of grief.

Throughout his life, he has maintained a simple philosophy about loss. As he once told CBC: “We go on.”

Today, as he mourns his daughter, those who have long admired his work hope he is surrounded by the same warmth and love he has given to audiences for generations.
