Well, we’re sorry to be the barrier or bad news here, but we really didn’t want it to be this way. Especially since this film is such an iconic part of the 90s, basically defining what a rom-com is. It looks like, despite the original cast being down for a sequel to one of the most successful and well-known movies, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” is out. Yes, Cameron Diaz is out.
Flat-out. Not “maybe,” not “we’re talking,” nope, she’s not returning for the sequel. We know, it’s tragic. BUT, don’t worry, it’s for a good and sweet reason. According to several sources close to her, “Cameron is not doing it. She’s done with Hollywood.” She is so out that apparently, the actress has been ignoring phone calls, messages, and even mutual-friend pleas. Big yikes.
A Step Back From Hollywood for Cameron Diaz
Remember the girl-next-door turned blockbuster queen? That’s Diaz, hands down. She broke out in the ‘90s with “The Mask,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and yes, “My Best Friend’s Wedding” in 1997. There she portrayed the iconic Kimmy, the sweet fiancée who unwittingly becomes the target of Julianne’s sabotage campaign.
But around the 2010s, she started slowing down. After the revamp of “Annie” in 2014, she announced she was “done” with the travel-heavy film life. So, she was stepping away to focus on family, publishing, and business ventures to focus more on her personal life. But she still had her successful ventures, such as her wine brand, Avaline, and biotech investments.
Despite the decision to quit, she did make a brief comeback in Netflix’s “Back in Action “opposite Jamie Foxx, which was released in January 2025. Safe to say her fans went wild, believing the actress has come back for good. But, she made it known she would only be doing low-key projects. That’s when she quietly stepped back again, now, with a confirmed voice return in “Shrek 5” set for 2027!
In other words, Diaz has curated her career on her own terms. If it doesn’t fit her mood, she’s politely opting out. And “My Best Friend’s Wedding 2”? Well, maybe it’s too demanding, meaning she’ll have to be away from her family for a long time? We understand, of course; we’re just sad the whole cast won’t be back together.
‘My Best Friend’s Wedding 2’ & What We Know
Sony is apparently moving ahead with the sequel regardless. Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney are still expected to be involved, and acclaimed writer-director Celine Song is scripting.Mulroney even spilled that lawyers were talking. That is, things are in motion.
Roberts herself has said, on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2023, that she’d be game to revisit the universe, especially to check in on Kimmy and Michael’s marriage. But Diaz? She’s giving that part of her story a speed-limit sign and proceeding with the docs.
We won’t blame her; sometimes nostalgia fatigue is real. Hollywood’s riding a ‘90s reboot wave, including “Happy Gilmore 2,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “Freakier Friday,” to name a few, have been making waves. It seems like now all we’re getting are either reboots or continuations. So, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by endless rehashes.
So, there’s no shame in Diaz crafting a post-Hood life where she calls the shots, whether that’s one film, none, or just voice acting. This isn’t betrayal, it’s peace. So yeah, it may sting for fans. But her stepping away doesn’t destroy the sequel; the narrative just gets a remix. At least that’s how we’re seeing it!
Sometimes the bravest move is stepping back. Diaz’s decision feels bold because it says “not every story needs resurrection.” Some are just better left glowing in our memory. We appreciate her confidence! So go ahead, Diaz, choose your projects, guard your energy, and don’t feel guilty about walking away when the story no longer fits!
