George Hamilton has revealed that he completely lost his memory after undergoing a surgery a number of years ago. The Golden Globe winner and “Dynasty” actor, now 87, recalled in a recent interview that he was having to read his own biography – “Don’t Mind If I Do: My Adventures in Hollywood” – to try and remember who he was.
Though the surgery itself remains undisclosed, George chatted about what happened and how it led him to grapple with profound questions about who he really believes that he is.
What Did George Say About What Happened?

George turned 87 last week and chatted to Page Six about his memory loss in an interview. The brave actor shared: “I had to read my own biography to learn who I was. And I had to think, ‘Do I like this person?’ I read it through several times and looked at things from my past and I wasn’t sure if I had done them.”
The horrible experience has led George to shifting his focus more onto his core values, and ensuring that any ego that crops up in his life is kept in check. He continued to explain: “Other things have come and gone, but kindness and good manners and optimism and belief in something more important than our egos is something people probably don’t think I think about, but it’s most important to me at this age. You realize those are the things that are the valuable things in life once you have lived it. You don’t want to learn it too late.”
George went on to gush about how grateful he feels for his girlfriend Katherine Bryan, who perfectly embodies these grounding values. He sentimentally shared: “She’s great. Best thing is we bring a lot of fun into each other’s life . . . There is a shorthand in our relationship. Her consideration for other people is extraordinary. Her family, her friends—she keeps a tight group with her that just adore her and they’ve been kind enough to accept me. You bring with you into any relationship your world and if someone isn’t part of it or doesn’t like it, you can’t exist; you need them as well as their friends to like you. Her world is so much fun.”
George’s Film and TV Career
George’s career in the media industry began all the way back in the 1950s and 60s. He won a Golden Globe Award for his debut performance in “Crime and Punishment USA”, and only went on to achieve more breakthroughs with his 60s hits “Home from the Hill”, “Where the Boys Are”, and “Your Cheatin’ Heart”.
Today George is largely semi-retired from acting, though he does make public appearances on occasion to engage with his fans. His most recent TV role was playing the part of Gran-Pappy Brett Doris on “American Housewife”. Prior to that the star made guest appearances on a few shows including “Grace and Frankie”, “Hot in Cleveland”, and “Pushing Daisies”.
