After a difficult year filled with grief and personal loss, ’60s television star Kathy Garver is opening up about the unexpected moment that brought joy back into her life — adopting a new French bulldog she encountered by chance in Palm Springs.
60s Star Kathy Garver Reflects on Loss of Husband & Sister
The veteran actress, best known for her role as Cissy Davis on the 1960s television series “Family Affair,” shared the story with fans in a Facebook post on Friday, Jan. 16.
Garver, 79, wrote that the past year had been especially difficult following the deaths of both her husband and her sister, as well as the loss of her beloved dog the year before.
“I have been somewhat lonely since my husband and sister passed this year, and my dog of 18 years passed a year ago,” Garver wrote.
What began as a routine drive after attending the Palm Springs International Film Festival soon turned into a moment that would change her life in an unexpected and special way.
Kathy Garver Finds Comfort with New Dog After Family Losses
In the social media post, Garver revealed she was traveling from the film festival to her brother’s home when she suddenly noticed a small animal darting into traffic.
“All of a sudden, a little black dog darted in front of my car,” she wrote. “I almost hit the scared, shivering bundle of fur.”
After bringing the dog to a shelter and learning the owner did not want to reclaim her, the actress said she could not stop thinking about the dog in the days that followed.
“I couldn’t get the little dog out of my head,” she wrote, recalling how the animal had showered her with affection when they first met. “I called every day for a week.”
When the surrender was finalized, Garver returned to the shelter and adopted the sweet pup, renaming her “Jacqueline Chanel.”
“Chanel has now adjusted to her forever home with alacrity and love,” Garver shared.
Kathy Garver Receives Outpouring of Support from Fans
Garver’s post quickly drew an outpouring of supportive comments from longtime admirers who have followed her career since her childhood fame.
“I believe there are no coincidences. You each came into the other’s life when there was a need. You two were meant to cross paths that day,” one fan wrote.
“I just love this story! And I’m so happy you found each other!” another commented.
According to Parade, Garver originally traveled to Palm Springs in support of a new documentary connected to Elvis, Rocky and Me, the memoir she narrated as an audiobook.
That performance recently earned her first-ever Grammy nomination, marking a significant late-career milestone for the former child star, who has increasingly focused on voice work and audiobook narration in recent years.
