A Special Birthday Shared With ‘Family Affair’ Co-Star Johnny Whitaker
Garver’s milestone birthday also came with a meaningful coincidence. She shares her December 13 birthday with former “Family Affair” co-star Johnny Whitaker, who played Jody on the series.
“Family Affair” aired from 1966 to 1971 on CBS and starred Brian Keith as a bachelor raising his late brother’s children.
Garver played the eldest sibling, Cissy, alongside Anissa Jones and Whitaker, who portrayed twins Buffy and Jody. Jones died in 1976 at age 18.
Whitaker, born December 13, 1959, turned 66 this year. Fellow child star Erin Murphy marked the day with a post that read, “Please join me in wishing a very happy 66th birthday to my friend Johnny Whitaker!”
How Kathy Garver Landed Her Iconic ‘Family Affair’ Role
GettyGarver has often reflected on how she nearly missed out on her most famous role.
In a 2016 interview with The Windy City Times, she recalled being the last leading cast member hired for “Family Affair” and how a quick transformation helped her land the job.
“At the time I was going to UCLA, and Family Affair had been primarily cast except for Cissy,” she said. “Something happened to the original Cissy, so they needed a new one, but they wanted a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl. At that time I had brown hair and brown eyes.”
Her mother stepped in with a creative solution.
“My mother sprayed my hair with Streaks and Tips Hairspray that makes your hair lighter. It made my hair bronze gold. It was very hard so when you tapped it it would not move,” Garver recalled.
When a producer questioned the unusual look, Garver improvised.
“When I met with the producer, he asked what was wrong with my hair. He said it looked green. I joked, ‘You are not doing a remake of The Boy with Green Hair?’ That was my screen test and the rest is history.”
A Milestone Marked After a Year of Personal Loss
Garver’s birthday celebration comes after a devastating year. In August, she announced the death of her husband of 44 years, David Travis. Less than two months later, Garver also lost her sister, actress Beverly Adams.
Despite the heartbreak, Garver’s 80th birthday reflected resilience, connection, and love from fans and friends alike.
