HBO Star Shares Uplifting Health Update After Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis

British actress Marisa Abela is offering an inspiring health update after her earlier thyroid cancer diagnosis — news that has heartened fans around the world.

The “Industry” star, who first received the diagnosis in her early 20s, spoke candidly about her journey through treatment and recovery, emphasizing strength, gratitude and a renewed outlook on life in a new interview with The Times

Abel’s Opens Up About Her Diagnosis

Abela, 29, revealed that she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 23 after doctors discovered a lump on her neck during a period of unusual fatigue.

She underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove the tumor and later received radioactive iodine treatment to ensure any remaining cancer cells were addressed.

Although the experience was challenging, Abela says she’s now cancer-free and in good health, and that the journey has given her a fresh appreciation for life’s priorities.

“I’m all in the clear now, thank God,” Abela said in a recent interview, adding that she will be on lifelong medication because her thyroid no longer functions.

“I don’t have a working thyroid so these pills sort of create one. I’m never going to miss those appointments,” she told the outlet.

She described learning to manage her hormone levels with prescribed medication as a part of her new normal and stressed the importance of ongoing care and check-ups.

All About Abela’s Career

The actress, who rose to prominence for her role as Yasmin Kara-Hanani on HBO’s “Industry,” went on to win a BAFTA Award in 2025, and later portrayed Amy Winehouse in the biographical film “Back to Black.”

Despite her busy, high-profile career, she says her health journey has deepened her perspective both personally and professionally.

Abela’s positive update resonates with others who have faced serious health challenges.

Her openness about the diagnosis — and how she handled it with courage and determination — has prompted admiration from fans and fellow actors alike.

Medical experts note that thyroid cancer is often highly treatable, particularly when caught early, and that many people go on to lead full, healthy lives after treatment.

Regular monitoring and follow-up care help keep potential recurrence in check, and hormone therapy can effectively replace the function of a removed thyroid.

Looking ahead, Abela continues to build on her career while staying mindful of her health, with new projects on the horizon and a steadfast commitment to sharing her journey in a way that inspires others.

The new season of “Industry” is set to debut on January 11.
