Nicolas Cage has played many iconic roles in the past, but he also turned down two major characters that went on to become huge hits.
In an interview with Variety published on Wednesday, May 27, the “Con Air” actor opened up about nearly landing roles in a major superhero film and a cult classic comedy.
Which Iconic Movie Roles Did Nicolas Cage Turn Down?
GettyCage, who now goes by the name Nick Cage, revealed that he almost played the iconic villain Green Goblin/Norman Osborn in the 2002 “Spider-Man” movie starring Tobey Maguire.
However, Cage ultimately decided not to take the role, which eventually went to Willem Dafoe.
Cage recalled having a conversation with director Sam Raimi where he pitched an idea for the “Spider-Man” movie, but was shut down.
“Sam and I had a great lunch, and I did say during the lunch, ‘Listen, whoever plays Spider-Man, let them do one scene where they’re crawling around like a spider when they’re alone,’ and it didn’t happen,” Cage told the outlet.
The actor continued, “He wanted me to do the Green Goblin. I liked the idea of Sam Raimi because of ‘Evil Dead 1’ and ‘2,’ and I wanted to work with him, but I had this other film called ‘Adaptation.'”

Cage also revealed that he almost landed the role of Lloyd Christmas in the 1994 comedy “Dumb and Dumber.” However, he turned it down due to his busy schedule.
“It happened with Jim and ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ and I said, ‘I’m going to do this other film called ‘Leaving Las Vegas,”‘ the actor recalled. “And with Sam, I told him, I’m going to do ‘Adaptation.'”
Despite both films going on to become major blockbusters, Cage said he does not regret turning down the iconic roles.
“Both those decisions were the right ones for me, and I’m happy with those results,” the actor added.
And it seems Cage made the right choice as the film “Leaving Las Vegas” earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Meanwhile, “Adaptation” was also critically acclaimed and received four Oscar nominations.
Fans React to Nicholas Cage’s Revelation
GettyOne fan commented, “So glad he did ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ that thoroughly deserved his Oscar for that role.”
Another noted, “He didn’t lose anything by not starring in iconic blockbusters. He has been in some iconic roles e.g. ‘Face/Off,’ ‘Con Air,’ ‘Leaving Las Vegas.'”
Someone added, “Nicolas Cage isn’t just an actor – he’s also an entire genre!”
Cage is now playing a superhero in “Spider-Noir.” He portrays Ben Reilly, a private investigator in Depression-era New York City who decides to retire his Spider-Man alter ego after his wife’s death (played by Diane Kruger).
Previously, Cage opened up about his experience in filming the series.
“Well, it’s both thrilling and daunting because I knew I was going to go for something,” the actor shared. “It wasn’t necessarily going to sound like me. I was going to try to feel like a black and white noir film actor from the 30s.”
He continued, “I was like, here goes. I’m going in. I’m going and talking like that guy. It took guts first, trust, and a little bit of love. And I’m amazed they let me do it.”
