The iconic Sharon Stone has bravely revealed the very specific breaking point of her marriage to journalist and editor Phil Bronstein.
Stone, 68, was married to Bronstein for six years, from 1998 until 2004, having met him a year earlier in 1997. It was the star’s second marriage, after her first to television producer Michael Greenburg, which lasted from 1984 until 1990.
Per Page Six, on the Monday, June 1 episode of David Begnaud’s “The Person Who Believed In Me” podcast (titled “Sharon Stone on Abuse, Death, and Who Believed in Her”), the “Basic Instinct” and “Casino” star described the shocking incident that led to her decision to divorce the now 75-year-old Bronstein.
Phil Bronstein’s Reaction to Sharon Stone’s Health Scare Was the Last Straw
GettyIn the early 2000s, Sharon Stone was shocked to learn she had multiple tumors in her breasts.
She told David Begnaud on Monday, “One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast. And the doctor had come out to my house and said, ‘Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they’re all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they’re cancer.'”
Stone instantly went into denial and told the doctor, “I don’t have cancer.”
When the doctor replied, “You don’t get to decide that,” Stone defiantly fired back, “I do. I do get to decide that. I’m deciding.”
Regardless, Stone made the difficult decision to have surgery to remove the tumors, saying, “I’m not [expletive] around.”
Bronstein’s reaction to his then-wife’s decision to have a double mastectomy was the straw that broke the camel’s back in the couple’s relationship.
Bronstein Did Not Support Stone’s Decision to Have a Double Mastectomy
GettyContinuing her discussion with David Begnaud, Sharon Stone told the host about what happened when she revealed her decision to have her breasts removed.
“My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’ And got up and left the room,” said Stone.
Begnaud replied, “Which part was ridiculous?”
Stone responded, “That I would have a bilateral [mastectomy]. He was furious.”
Begnaud then asked, “Oh, not that the cancer, if it [were] true, might kill you?”
“No, no,” replied Stone, before adding, “And so the doctor said to him, ‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down.’ And I said, ‘I make the decisions, not you.'”
Stone then said, “That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over. It was just over in the room. You could just tell. It was over. It was just over. He thought I was ridiculous, he thought it was foolish, he thought I was making too many decisions myself.”
Stone Has Moved on With Her Life
GettyWhile Sharon Stone hasn’t married again since her split from Bronstein, she does have three adoptive sons to keep her busy. The oldest of the three, Roan Joseph Stone, was actually adopted by Stone and Bronstein in 2000. They shared custody of him when they divorced.
In addition to motherhood, Stone is still enjoying success in the acting world.
In 2025, she appeared in the action thriller movie sequel “Nobody 2.” This year, she has already appeared in the brilliant teen drama series “Euphoria” and will star in the upcoming comedy movie “In Memoriam,” which hits theaters this month.
Other projects she has on the horizon include the comedy-drama flick “Babies” and the drama film “Speed-the-Plow.” Neither movie has a confirmed release date yet.
We wish the fabulous Sharon Stone all the very best with her ongoing career and look forward to seeing all of her upcoming work.
