Just days after giving fans a glimpse of herself as Lara Croft in Prime Video’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” series, Sophie Turner has revealed that she discovered a chronic health issue while preparing for the action role.
In order to get the “Game of Thrones” star’s body prepared for the physically demanding part, she put in a lot of work. In fact, while opening up about readying herself for the job during an interview on The Julia Cunningham Show, Turner explained, “We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February of last year, of training.”
She added, “Yeah, so it’s been a lot.”
She also explained, “But, I also realized that it’s much easier to kind of build muscle if you’ve never worked out before in your life, which I never had. So, it’s taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.”
Frankly, the training was so intense that it led Turner to discover a problematic health condition that she wasn’t aware of before.
Sophie’s Problem Is ‘Perpetual’
GettyWhile Turner dedicated herself to the extreme training that was required for her “Tomb Raider” role, the actress revealed, “[I] learned I have a perpetual back problem.”
Of course, Turner isn’t alone when it comes to this particular issue.
“In 2020, low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase to 843 million cases by 2050, driven largely by population expansion and ageing,” according to the World Health Organization.
Despite the chronic problem, Turner was still on board with the demanding training.
Turner Was Thrilled to Get the Role that Challenges Her
Although there are still plenty of details about the new “Tomb Raider” production that are being kept under wraps, one thing is clear: Turner was absolutely thrilled to land the role in the series that was created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
“God, I was over the moon,” she told Net-a-Porter when it comes to getting the gig.
She also admitted, “It’s very different to the roles that I usually play. I’m not normally seen as an action girl or strong in who she is as a person. I often play characters that are constantly questioning themselves.”
The star noted, “It’s refreshing to do something different.”
Indeed, the actress is set on taking roles that “stretch me more and more.”
