What We Learned From TMZ’s Special on the Reiner Tragedy

A new “TMZ Investigates” special, “The Reiner Murders: What Really Happened,” delves deeper than previous news reports into the heartbreaking case of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, who were killed in their Brentwood home in December 2025.

The special, airing on Fox and streaming on Hulu, combines reporting, interviews and source accounts to offer fresh perspective on how the tragedy unfolded and the context surrounding it — including mental health, medical decisions and the challenges faced by the family.

Nick Was Reportedly Unhappy With His Weight

One of the central revelations in the documentary centers around their son, Nick Reiner’s mental health in the weeks leading up to the slayings.

Sources tell TMZ that Nick, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2020, appeared stable on medication for a long period. Around a month prior to the tragedy, he reportedly expressed to his doctors he was unhappy with his weight gain, which his medical team then made the decision to switch his meds.

The special suggests that a decision by doctors to change his medication about a month before the murders may have triggered a devastating downward spiral in his condition.

According to those sources, the new drugs were allegedly linked to increased erratic behavior and agitation — a sharp departure from the stability he had shown under his previous treatment plan.

Rob and Michele Reiner were aware that the meds were changed and we concerned, according to the outlet.

“We’re told Rob and Michele Reiner were well aware that they changed Nick’s meds. They were alarmed at what they were seeing. There were changes in his behavior. They just didn’t know what to do,” TMZ’s executive producer Charles Latibeaudiere said.

This medical change, described in the documentary as a pivotal moment, is now part of the legal and mental health narrative surrounding Nick’s case.

The outlet pointed out that the schizophrenia-related disorder includes symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and disorganized thinking, and that altering a medication regimen without a psychiatric hold contributed to a serious break from reality prior to the incident.

Nick’s Current State

In addition to exploring the timeline and medical context, the documentary touches on how Nick perceives his situation now that he is behind bars.

According to insiders, Nick believes he is the victim of a conspiracy, convinced that those responsible for his incarceration are working against him — a belief rooted in his ongoing mental health struggles even after the killings.

Nick Reiner is currently being charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Rob Reiner was a beloved filmmaker and actor whose credits included “The Princess Bride” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” while Michele Singer Reiner was respected as a photographer and producer.

Their deaths shocked Hollywood and sparked widespread coverage, bringing intense scrutiny to both the family’s privacy and the broader questions raised by the case.

The couple also had two additional children, Romy and Jake.

The siblings released a heartbreaking statement shortly after the devastating tragedy took place.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the siblings said at the time. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
