Alex Kingston is opening up about a deeply personal chapter of her life. The “ER” and “Doctor Who” star revealed she was diagnosed with womb cancer in 2024 after years of quietly dealing with symptoms she initially brushed off.
In a candid interview with The Independent, the 61-year-old actress shared that she experienced bloating, body aches, and fatigue but assumed it was just part of getting older. “I had assumed that the way I was feeling was old age,” Kingston said. “I thought, ‘OK, this is what it’s like to be in my 60s.’ But a lot of how I was feeling was to do with my illness.”
The actress admitted she never suspected cancer. “Even though my body was telling me something was seriously wrong, I just kept thinking, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bad UTI or fibroids,’” she recalled.

Even though my body was telling me there was something very seriously wrong, I kept thinking, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bad UTI or fibroids.’”
After a series of medical tests, doctors confirmed that Kingston had womb cancer, also known as endometrial cancer. The condition affects about 65,000 women each year in the United States, with most cases found in post-menopausal women.
Facing Surgery & Recovery
Kingston underwent a hysterectomy followed by radiation therapy as part of her treatment. “I had a major operation,” she said. “Despite having gone through all of that, and any cancer is really tough to accept, the minute I had the operation, I suddenly felt like myself again.”
She credited her resilience and optimism for helping her through recovery. “It took a huge part of my life,” she added, “but I feel healthy and whole again.”
Best known for her beloved roles as Dr. Elizabeth Corday on “ER” and River Song on “Doctor Who,” Kingston is now returning to the spotlight with a new sense of purpose. The actress, who is competing on Season 23 of the BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing,” has been inspiring fans with her grace, strength, and joy for life.
By speaking openly about her health journey, Kingston hopes to encourage others to trust their instincts and take their bodies seriously. Her story is a heartfelt reminder that awareness and early action can make all the difference.
