On January 1, 2026, CNN is airing “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” a documentary about one of comedy’s most iconic and provocative figures. Here are the various celebrities who were interviewed for the piece and how they’re connected to Chase.
Martin Short
GettyMartin Short may have been a “Saturday Night Live” cast member just like Chase, but the two weren’t on the show at the same time, nor was the NBC sketch comedy program the direct reason Short and Chase know each other. Instead, the two, alongside Steve Martin and with “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels producing, starred in a movie called “Three Amigos.”
The 1986 western comedy film follows three silent film actors who are mistaken for real heroes. According to People, Chase recently expressed interest in working with Short and Martin again, especially with the success of “Only Murders in the Building.”
“I miss them, that’s all I’m saying. I really miss them, they’re great,” Chase said of his former costars.
Lorne Michaels
GettyMichaels may be the reason Chase shot to fame back in the 70s. He cast Chase on the very first season of “SNL,” where Chase subsequently became the first “Weekend Update” host and almost always introduced the show each week by saying, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night.”
Although Chase left “SNL” before his second season was over, Michaels’ decision to cast him played a large part in the massive success as an actor that Chase has achieved today.
Dan Aykroyd
GettyDan Aykroyd, like Chase, was one of the original “SNL” cast members when the show first premiered in 1976. Decades later, Aykroyd wrote, directed, and starred in “Nothing But Trouble” with Chase.
According to a review of the documentary on RogerEbert.com, Aykroyd says Chase is “simultaneously talented and very dangerous.”
Goldie Hawn
GettyAfter his “SNL” days, Chase worked with Goldie Hawn on two films: “Foul Play” and “Seems Like Old Times.” According to LateNigher, Hawn has positive things to say about Chase in the documentary. For example, she said, “He has a deep heart and that’s the other part of the wild man.”
Beverly D’Angelo
GettyBeverly D’Angelo and Chase played a married couple in “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” a box office hit that spawned five sequels. Those films weren’t the last time D’Angelo and Chase worked together. In 2015, they filmed a pilot called “Chev & Bev,” according to Deadline. Unfortunately, the show didn’t get picked up for a full season.
Paul Shaffer
GettyPaul Shaffer, who is perhaps best known for being the bandleader on David Letterman’s late-night shows, also appears in “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.” Before his time with Letterman, Shaffer was part of the “SNL” band during the show’s early years. Shaffer and Chase not only worked on “SNL” together, but also on a comedy special Chase was filming for NBC, according to Cracked.
Ryan Reynolds
GettyChase and Ryan Reynolds haven’t acted together, but the “Deadpool” star also appears in the CNN documentary. It makes sense, considering both have starred in National Lampoon movies. Plus, in a previous interview with ETalk on CTV, Reynolds said he used to use Chase as inspiration during auditions.
