More than a month after the passing of reality star Todd Meadows, new details are now starting to emerge. Meadows’ cause of death has been confirmed following a tragic incident during filming for “Deadliest Catch.”
Todd Meadows’ Cause of Death Confirmed After Fatal Bering Sea Accident
According to a death certificate obtained by TMZ on Monday, April 6, Todd Meadows died from “drowning with probable hypothermia” and “submersion of body in cold water” following a tragic accident at sea.
The document states he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. on February 25 after the incident aboard the Aleutian Lady crab vessel in the Bering Sea.
The report also confirms that his body was later returned to Anchorage, Alaska, where he was cremated.

On March 2, as confirmed in an official Facebook post shared by Captain Rick Shelford, the incident occurred during fishing operations while cameras were rolling.
At the time, production was underway for season 22 of the long-running Discovery Channel series. According to Deadline, filming was nearing completion when the tragedy took place, and the season was later wrapped.
A spokesperson for the Discovery Channel shared a statement following the news.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows,” the statement read.
“This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Captain Rick Shelford Shares Emotional Tribute
Captain Rick Shelford confirmed Meadows’ death in a heartfelt message shared on Facebook on March 1.
“February 25, 2026, was the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea,” Shelford wrote at the time. “We lost our brother, Todd Meadows.”
He described Meadows as a valued member of the crew who quickly became like family.
“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family,” he continued. “His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”
Shelford also reflected on Meadows’ devotion to his loved ones.
“Todd’s love for his children, his family and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply and brought joy to those around him. Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express.”
He added, “Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew and this brotherhood,” before concluding, “Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him. Rest easy brother, till we meet again.”
Family Seeks Justice for Beloved Todd Meadows
Another TMZ report states that the family of the late “Deadliest Catch” deckhand is moving forward with legal action, preparing to file a wrongful death lawsuit in the wake of his tragic death.
His mother, Angela Meadows, previously told TMZ, “We don’t want to put the blame on anyone, but someone has to take responsibility. We will have justice for Todd.”
Family Remembered as Community Rallies Around His Children
A GoFundMe page created in the wake of Todd Meadows’ death paints a heartfelt picture of a father deeply devoted to his three young sons.
“He was a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world,” the page reads. “Everything he did was for them — their smiles, their futures and the memories they will carry with them.”
The fundraiser was launched to support his children, help cover funeral costs and ease the financial strain on the family in the months ahead. It also noted that Meadows died “doing what he loved — crabbing out on Alaskan waters.”
