The “Deadliest Catch” community is mourning the loss of deckhand Todd Meadows, who has died at just 25 years old.
Meadows, who was connected to the long-running Discovery Channel reality series about the dangerous world of Alaskan crab fishing, passed away recently, according to a Facebook post from Captain Rick Shelford.
Shelford Broke the Tragic News
In the post, Shelford revealed he passed on Feb. 26.
“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away,” he wrote. “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.
Details surrounding his death were not immediately made public.”
He added how he had a great love for his children and family.
“Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express,” he added. “We ask that you lift Todd’s children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him.”
News of his passing spread quickly among fans of the show, which has followed generations of fishermen braving brutal storms, icy waters, and exhausting work schedules in the Bering Sea.
Meadows’ death at such a young age has left viewers and fellow crew members stunned, highlighting once again the tight-knit nature of the “Deadliest Catch” family.
While Meadows wasn’t one of the franchise’s longtime captains, deckhands are the backbone of every vessel featured on the series.
They handle grueling physical labor, hauling heavy crab pots, braving freezing spray, and working long shifts with little rest — all in one of the world’s most dangerous professions.
The Discovery series, which premiered in 2005, has long documented the risks fishermen face each season.
Over the years, the show’s community has experienced heartbreaking losses both on and off the water, making Meadows’ passing feel especially personal to longtime viewers.
As tributes began circulating online, fans shared memories of the young fisherman and offered condolences to his loved ones.
Many noted how the show’s raw portrayal of life at sea creates a powerful bond between audiences and the crews they watch year after year.
The Discovery Channel issued a statement that was given to TMZ.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time,” it read.
Meadows Has a GoFundMe
A GoFundMe was set up for the reality TV star.
“This unimaginable loss has left his children without their father, his parents without their son, his siblings without their brother and his family broken,” it read. “As the family navigates this heartbreaking time, we are raising funds to help support his three boys, assist with funeral expenses, and help ease the financial burden in the months ahead.”
At the time of writing, it has raised almost $12,000.
