Paramount+ is the home to a wide array of shows and movies, both originals and options from other networks. One of the most popular franchises available on the streamer is Star Trek, and now the latest show set in the universe, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” has been canceled ahead of season two, with high praise from critics but mixed reactions from fans.
Paramount+ first ordered “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” as a series in 2023. The streaming platform then renewed the series for a second season before the first season aired, which happened in January 2026. The finale came in March.
Paramount+ Has Issued Statements on the ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Cancellation
GettyThe news of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy being canceled comes exclusively from Variety. Now, CBS Studios and Paramount+ have issued a joint statement.
They said, “We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the ‘Star Trek’ universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision.”
They added about the show’s future, “We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.
It’s unclear when season two of the series will premiere. However, the cast and crew have filmed the first season.
The Paramount+ Show Had Strong Reviews From Critics
Paramount+ is pulling the plug on “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” amid strong reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently sits at an 87% rating. However, audiences aren’t as thrilled with the series. They gave it a 51% rating on the platform.
One critic, Monita Roy Mohan, praised the series, saying, “Starfleet Academy brings new life into the franchise, gives us a different setting, combines layered characters who have deep flaws with intense stories, and ends with a message of hope and community. What more can you ask for from Star Trek?”
Another one, Louis Skye, said, “This is Star Trek. We need more Star Trek in our lives. Whatever criticisms we have, despite how annoying that central romance is, when those Starfleet ships appear on screen, I’m back to us being six years old… I’m already going to love this.”
So, why did Paramount+ decide to axe the series? The prevailing belief is that the decision was driven by low viewership. As Variety notes, the series failed to place on the Nielsen Top 10 streaming viewership charts despite having 10 episodes.

It’s such a good show. I know my husband and I will miss it. It was such a nice piece to add to the franchise. What a shame!
Such a travesty letting this show go, it was terrific and deserves a second chance. My .2c.
