In October 2025, fans feared the worst when Dolly Parton’s sister, Freida Parton, asked for prayers for the country music icon due to her health struggles. Fans reacted to the post, with thousands of messages and questions about what had happened. There was so much concern that “The Voice” mentor had to break her silence with an Instagram video, informing fans she was doing alright with the memorable line, “I ain’t dead, yet.”
Freida meant well with her request, but did it get her in trouble with her sister for all the worry it caused? She is breaking her silence surrounding that time and why she was so eager to ask fans for their prayers.
The Message That Scared Dolly Parton’s Fans
Freida gave an interview to News Channel 11, informing them that Dolly was not angry with her for asking her fans for prayers. Freida also believes it is something their mother Avie would’ve done. “I just said what I said because Mama told us to pray. And so I prayed, and I wanted people to pray for her because she wasn’t feeling good,” Freida said. “It’s like, hey, I didn’t mean it to happen. I just asked for people to pray for [her] because that’s the way I was raised.”
“She probably thought, ‘Well, she didn’t know about the internet then. She had no idea,’” Freida said. “So I didn’t get in trouble with her or none of the family. But some people were very upset with me because I had said that.”
The timing of Freida’s post had been unfortunate because it was clear that Dolly had been struggling with health issues. She is a private person, and the extent of her health problems was not clear, leading many fans to fear the worst after she had postponed her Las Vegas residency in September.
Dolly Parton’s Health Update
On Facebook in October, Freida had informed fans that she had been “up all night praying for” Dolly. “Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been led to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me,” she wrote.
Dolly is so loved, so when she took to Instagram to make a statement about her health, fans sighed a collective sigh of relief. “I wanted you to know that I’m not dying,” she said at the time. “There’s just a lot of rumors flying around, but I figured if you heard it from me, you’d know that I was okay. So anyhow, that’s what I wanted to say, and I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me, and I ain’t done working. So I love you for caring, and keep praying for me.”
Fans adore Dolly, and so does her sister. “Dolly’s always been a guardian angel to me,” Freida told News Channel 11. “And Mama got sick when we were 13 in Floyd, and we had to go live with Dolly and Carl. And in Brentwood, they hadn’t even built the big house yet. They used to let us go out there and pick up wood and stuff, for extra money.”
