Dolly Parton’s legacy continues to shine as more cities dedicate a special day in her honor.
In the wake of her passing on August 25, local leaders across the country are declaring September 25 Dolly Parton Appreciation Day, a nod to the singer’s iconic 1980 hit “9 to 5.”
On Friday, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal became the latest official to recognize the date in her honor. The special day will recognize Parton’s remarkable contributions to music, entertainment, and philanthropy.
“I am officially declaring 9/25 (“9 to 5″) as Dolly Parton Appreciation Day in the Borough of Manhattan,” Hoylman-Sigal said in the proclamation shared on Threads.

Hoylman-Sigal’s proclamation also praised Parton’s impact on society through her humanitarian work.
“Dolly Parton’s compassion, resilience, humor, and dedication to giving back have made her an enduring symbol of hope and generosity, touching countless lives far beyond the stage and screen,” Hoylman-Sigal stated.
He continued, “We celebrate the extraordinary life, legacy, and lasting contributions of Dolly Parton, whose talent, kindness, and humanitarian spirit continue to inspire people across generations and throughout the world.”
In 2021, Parton opened up about giving back to society. “I’m kind of addicted to the feeling of giving,” the country star told PEOPLE at the time. “Knowing that I’m doing something good for someone else.”
Dolly Parton Honored In Other Cities
The borough of Manhattan joins several cities that dedicated September 25 to Parton.
On Friday, New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno declared 9/25 “Dolly Day.” As part of the celebration, the city will host a parade featuring the Krewe of Dolly.
Lexington, Kentucky, will also host official community events on September 25 to celebrate Parton’s legacy. Donations from the event will go to the singer’s Imagination Library.
In addition, Cocke County, Tennessee, former mayor Rob Mathis declared September 25 “Dolly Parton Day” in the county.
Other smaller celebrations are planned across the country, including a Dolly Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Plant Bar Chattanooga in Tennessee. Fans can color Dolly-inspired pages and purchase $1 butterflies to place at an altar in her honor, with all proceeds benefiting the Imagination Library.
Fans from northern Colorado will also gather in downtown Loveland for the Dolly Parton Bar Crawl on 9/25. Meanwhile, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will host a “Dolly Appreciation Day” on September 25, featuring a free movie screening of “9 to 5,” a Dolly Look-Alike Contest, and more.
Parton wrote “9 to 5” for the film of the same name, in which she starred alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. In a 2020 interview with TODAY’s Willie Geist, the legendary singer recalled writing the hit song while on set.
“I did it on my fingernails,” Parton revealed at the time. “They sound like a typewriter. I didn’t have my guitar because I didn’t want to get too scattered because we were trying to stay in the mood, and they were doing lights and all that. So, I would just look around, and I would get ideas watching whatever was going on on the set.”
She continued, “I would just kind of play my little fingers, go back to the hotel at night, write down the words, get my guitar and start singing it. That’s how it all kind of how that all worked.”
