John Legend Has a Tradition at the End of Every Season of ‘The Voice’

When the red chairs stop spinning and the cameras cut to commercial, “The Voice” coaches don’t just retreat to their own corners. In fact, some of the show’s most meaningful moments happen completely off-camera. As “The Voice: Battle of Champions” gears up for its season 29 premiere, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend are sharing a rare glimpse into their behind-the-scenes bond. This includes a cozy end-of-season tradition that proves the competition may be fierce, but the friendships are very real.

End-Of-Season Dinner Party for ‘The Voice’ Coaches

During an interview with Access Hollywood at the end of season 18, Clarkson and Legend talked about their coaches-only wrap party. While he had to pause it during the pandemic, Legend revealed that he typically hosts the dinner party at the end of most seasons.

“I usually have [the other coaches] over for dinner on the last night of the show, on the finale day,” Legend said.

Clarkson chimed in, stating, “I’m coming this time! Someone’s watching mama’s kids, I’m having a good time!”

While it would be a good time, it would also be a good time in moderation. His get-togethers are “very chill” and “not a rave,” “The Voice” coaches went on to explain. Most of the coaches each season are “all parents,” they said, so it’s a mature dinner party with food and wine.

Other Coches’ Traditions

The coaches spend a lot of time together during these seasons. How else do they like to enjoy each other’s company?

Clarkson went on to explain they’ll “talk about kids” during the commercial breaks. If the LIve Shows on “The Voice” happen to overlap with football season, Legend said that “perhaps we’re watching during commercials.

That was more when Blake Shelton was on the show with him. Now that Shelton has left the show, maybe Legend can convince Adam Levine to watch with him?

Details on ‘The Voice: Battle of Champions’

Legend and Clarkson will be joining Levine for season 29, which is being dubbed “The Voice: Battle of Champions.” It will premiere on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 9/8c on NBC.

Yes, it will be a battle of the champions, but it’ll roughly take the same shape as other seasons. There will be Blind Auditions, then the competitive rounds, and then voting.

However, there will be some twists and rule changes along the way. First, of course, will be the fact that there will only be three coaches, with Clarkson, Levine, and Legend heading back to the red chairs.

We will also see some new format changes, such as the “Triple Turn Competition” and the “Super Steal.” We are also going to see the return of OG coach CeeLo Green, but in a totally new role.

“The Voice” season 29 premieres on Monday, February 23, at 9/8c with new episodes available to stream the next day on Peacock.
