Some Fans Are ‘Done’ With ‘The Voice’ Following Season 21

Some fans of NBC’s singing competition “The Voice” are vowing to boycott the show following the season 21 finale.

One person took to Reddit to express their disappointment with season 21 of the show and the winner.

“I am home tired of POC women not getting the reconciliation they deserve,” the post reads. “How is it season 754 & no one has won. I see these girls leaving it all on the stage & out sing the coffee shop singers. Yet they don’t win. Like am I missing something?”

The post garnered more than 60 comments, some from people who agreed with the post, and others from those who disagreed and said that it was all a matter of taste.

Some Fans Pointed out That the Show Is Based on Popularity

Some fans took the time to say that, since people vote to determine the winner, it is inherently based on popularity.

“This season it was very clear that Wendy had the best voice, probably the best contestant voice on the show ever. She amazed me…probably most of us,” one person wrote in response to the original post. “That being said, it felt like she had a serious problem emotionally connecting with the audience. Yes, being a female POC might have hurt her with the show’s demographics. I think it is crazy that she didn’t win.”

Another agreed, saying, “I mean I think Wendy has amazing talent but she didn’t draw me in as an entertainer, so I think people just sometimes have preferences for the winner as an all around entertainer they’d most like to see perform … . Same reason why a Gospel singer or classic country singer isn’t my preference.”

Others in the thread pointed out that the demographic of the show may skew older, which could be one reason why voters vote the way they do.

Some said they were not going to watch anymore.

“I need to just stop watching after the first live round. POC sometimes win, but the number of less talented white folks, especially teens, who win is just awful to watch,” one person wrote.

Another said that they have been heartbroken “almost every season” they’ve watched the show.

“Not sure how much longer I can continue watching,” the comment stated. “So saddened by how blatant it is.”

Some Fans Want Pop Singers to Make the Finale More Often

In a separate thread, fans lamented that pop singers generally don’t make it through to the finale of “The Voice.”

“POP SINGERS BARELY MAKE IT TO THE FINALE ANYMORE,” the title of the post reads.

One person replied with a possible explanation as to why that is the case.

“Gotta make it to the blinds to make it to the finale… The show loves 1970s music, maybe because they can get the rights for cheap. Not sure. I assumed Ariana [Grande] would be the pop genre coach, but she only got 2 or 3 who could really qualify as such, and they were very weak vocalists,” the reply stated.

Another person said that the finale “almost always has” big ballad singers, country singers and at least one notably young artist.

“Also voters have been tougher on girls lately, such as Allegra, Hailey, etc.,” one person added.

“The Voice” has not yet been renewed for season 22. If the show is renewed, then it will return in the fall cycle of 2022, likely in mid-September.

  1. I have never missed a week of the voice. Past winners were not always my first choice but entertaining. This recent season will be my last. The winners were talented but did not come close to the finalists finishing second, third or fourth. I feel like the popular vote gave a bubble gum version of the Kingston Trio the title. Will never see another episode or commercial supporting The Voice. I am a 72 year old male who regularly sings for my friends for entertainment. Please listen to the Gatlin Brothers’ All The Gold in California if you want to know how I really feel. I recently sang this for some karaoke friends who had lost a contest that was won by artists who were professionals.

  2. All of these talent shows are part popularity and part talent. We people choose not to watch because the one they like didn’t win that’s there lose. I agree Wendy is good but so is A Girl Named Tom.

  3. The Voice is a popularity contest, and in my opinion, the reason Blake has won so many seasons. I liked hearing Wendy sing, and there were times that she astonished me with a performance but I didn’t feel she won the season. Not because she was a POC (I voted for Jershika Maple), but because she was already a professional singer with a long career behind her. If it were not a popularity contest then Ryan Gallagher, arguably the best trained voice in show history, wouldn’t have been in the instant save. I thought We McDonald should have won but she was beaten by someone who wasn’t as good. Is is possible there is some unintentional bias on behalf of the audience? Absolutely, but I don’t believe so in this case.

  4. We are from Memphis, her home town, and wanted Wendy to win. The Girl name Tom won because they were more entertaining. Loved their season finale song with Kelly. Kept the recording so that we can play it back on occasion. Need to replace the 2 coaches in the middle. My opinion

  5. It’s called The Voice not the voices. Three part harmony, or any combo of multi-voices always sounds rhythmically better than an artist competing against voices. Stay true to your title THE VOICE!

  6. Any one of the finalists could have won this season. They were all so good. I think we will hear from Wendy again. Hopefully Blake will guide her.
I think this is just a platform to help you in the business. It really doesn’t matter if you win or not. Jennifer Hudson was 7th on American Idol and look what she has done in her career.

  7. I think they were all very talented. It didn’t matter who I favored , I gave votes to all of them, some more than others. As for Wendy, I loved her and Hailey and after this kind of exposure I don’t think they need to get excited. I am not going to get into it but I detect a little racisism. As it was said many times you have to vote. I have been disappointed many times over the years of the voice but I get over it. No different on the idol and I am a fan of that show to.

  8. Totally shocked to see a seasoned 30yr veteran with one of the best vocals we’ve had on this show in a long time, lose to a mere coffee bar group like GNT. Not that they are bad at all, in fact their harmonies r beautifful, but these kids cannot compete with Wendy individually and any professional musician will tell you that. The Voice has now lost all credibility as a reputable singing competition after this result and unless the producers change the format of the show where the judges have bigger insight into how this show is formulated or have a say in the final results, it won’t last long before it’s canceled. We’ve now seen the biggest outcry against a result in the show we’ve ever experienced and hopefully the producers take note. I’m very sure however Wendy will get a recording contract and proceed to be successful, whereas GNT will go back to their coffee bars after maybe a one hit wonder only, time will tell.

  9. I loved A Girl Named Tom!! Yes they should have won. For one thing they didn’t act as if it was wed to them. Wendy acted as if she was the winner from the beginning.

  10. I DON’T LIKE THE SCREAMIN TO HIT HIGH NOTES. I THOUHT THERE WAS WHITE PEOPLE THAT GOT LET GO BECAUSE THERE HAS TO BE BLACK PEOPLE IN THE TOP 10 THAT IS COMPLETE RACISEST LET THE BETTER VOICES GO THROUGH. WHY WAS WENDY (WHO IS A GOOD SINGER) ON THERE SHE IS A PRO. I DID LIKE, GIRL NAMED TOM BUT THERE WAS OTHER ONE OF COLOR AND OTHER RACE THAT WAS GOOD. GO BACK TO WHEN IT FIRST STARTED TO VOTE. I CAN”T VOTE WHERE I LIVE

  11. A Girl named Tom won because they deserved it and won fair and square. If I stop watching it would be because of Kelly Clarkson. She just gets louder and mouthier as the shows go on.

  12. I just wish ppl would quit whinnìng about who won or who should have
Who do you think make the winner the winner. Its not Voice judges(their votes go only so far) Its the people that make the final decision So seriously do you think the world get together and says “Make sure no color female wins ” Because if that’s happening I didn’t get the email before I voted
So sit back watch the show Hoping it has season 22 and enjoy Life is way to short to whine and cause a fight where it’s definitely not needed ✌

  13. I voted for A Girl named Tom. I felt they were very talented. There are many different genres and POC on the show. I thought Wendy was talented but also a seasoned professional. The blinds are fair because they can’t see the person and only pick them because of their voice. Then people at home vote. I vote for who I like. So does everyone else. Seems fair to me. The show is for non-professionals to get a break. I don’t like the way they try to change them. Let them be themselves.
