It’s been decades since the original “Will & Grace” series ended its run on NBC. Now, six years after the revival concluded, Eric McCormack is sharing his pitch for a potential reboot, featuring a “Heated Rivalry” twist.
McCormack recently attended the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 34th Academy Awards Viewing Party in Los Angeles. While there, he spoke to PEOPLE, sharing his idea for what a new version of “Will & Grace” would look like.
The 62-year-old actor said, “Here’s my pitch. Will moves to Vancouver to coach his nephew’s hockey team … a little [Heated] Rivalry.”
Eric McCormack Discussed The Legacy of ‘Will & Grace’
GettyMcCormack continued the PEOPLE interview by discussing how much “Will & Grace” means to popular culture, noting that the cast didn’t initially realize how important the series would become.
He said, “It’s incredible the journey it took. I mean, we always said that when we started, it was just a comedy. It was just fun. And then, suddenly, one day after we’d finished, Joe Biden said it was the most important step towards equality and marriage equality, and it’s just grown since then.”
The “Will & Grace” alum then said, “And now to meet these people that are maybe 20, and they watch their moms watch it, or they discovered it in their early teens, it’s pretty humbling.”
Eric Isn’t The Only Cast Member to Discuss a New Reboot
GettyThe “Will & Grace” reboot lasted for three seasons on NBC. Though the show didn’t run as long as many fans would have hoped, it’s generally considered a success due to strong viewership. Because of this, it may not be out of the question for there to be another reboot.
In 2022, Debra Messing spoke to PEOPLE about a potential continuation of the show, saying it’s something that may come decades down the line. She first discussed the existing reboot, saying it “was supposed to be only 10 episodes, and then it turned into three seasons.”
She added, “It was a gift to all of us to reacquaint ourselves with all of these characters as middle-aged people [dealing] with middle-aged issues. That was really a privilege that when you’re doing a sitcom, you don’t have.”
Regarding another reboot, the “Will & Grace” alum said, “The only way that I could see another iteration is if it was like ‘Golden Girls’ in Boca Raton. So I think we’re going to have to wait another 30 years. So we can talk again in 30 years and see where we’re at. Until then, just watch reruns.”
In additon to McCormack and Messing, “Will & Grace” also stars Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally. Both versions of the show are available to stream on Hulu.
