Patricia Heaton is talking about a major decision she made in her life that was brought on after he had a night with her children that left her “mortified.”
In an interview with Women’s World, the Everybody Loves Raymond star explained how she was struggling before the pandemic with having an empty nest. And with that, she turned to drinking.
“The things that had always anchored me—my family and my work—were gone. I started thinking, What am I supposed to do today?” she explained. “A glass of wine while cooking became wine with dinner, wine while cleaning up, and wine while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!. One night I realized I had almost finished an entire bottle by myself.”
She explained that due to her experience with acting where “you study behavior,” she noticed a change in hers.
“I was thinking about alcohol differently. I said a prayer: ‘God, I think You want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but You have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable,’” Heaton detailed. ““The next night I was with my sons and their friends, and I couldn’t pronounce the word ‘tradition.’ I tried three times. My youngest son said, ‘That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak.'”
” I was completely mortified. The next morning I said, ‘Okay, God. Message received.’ That was eight years ago.”
Patricia Heaton Has A New Alcohol-Removed Wine
Heaton and her husband, David Hunt, worked together and have created a new nonalcoholic wine that actually tastes like wine after they struggled to find one they liked.
“I tried a lot of NA wines,” she told Women’s World. “And they were always either very thin, flat or they tasted like grape juice, and so I thought there’s got to be a way to do this.”
The two launched Solubrae, with the name coming from the Latin word salubrious, meaning health-giving. According to the website, there are two types of wine available: Daylight, which is a white wine, and Sundown, which is a rosé. They will soon be adding a Red blend, sparkling rosé, and dry white.
“Women like to participate socially without feeling left out,” she added. “I wanted something that felt special.”

GettyIn the interview, Heaton also talked about her path to Hollywood, saying that she went to Ohio State University as a journalism major because her father was a sports writer and her brother was also a journalist.
” “I remember interviewing a fraternity brother for a story and thinking, He should be interviewing me. I’m much more interesting,” she recalled. “So I switched my major to theater. After graduating, I moved to New York with $800. I struggled for nine years. Then I moved to Los Angeles with no agent, no manager, no car and one commercial on a reel.”
Eventually, Heaton landed two of the most iconic sitcom roles, playing Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond and Frankie Heck in The Middle.
“Debra Barone and Frankie Heck are two of the greatest roles any actress could have,” Heaton reflected. “The reason Everybody Loves Raymond worked was because we were all living it at home. I had young children. I was exhausted. I was frustrated. That anger Debra had? I brought it from my own life. The writers brought stories from their marriages. And the audiences related to it all—they saw themselves in us.”
