Jason Alexander Reveals Who Else Was Considered To Play George Costanza

During a February episode of their “Really? no, Really?” podcast, Alexander and his co-host Peter Tilden spoke with Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, who wrote the book “Seinfeldia.” And one of their topics of conversation was how Alexander landed the role of George Costanza.

Specifically, he added who else was considered to play the comedian’s best friend.

“I know some of the people,” Alexander said. “So, I know about Chris Rock. I know about Danny DeVito. I know about Paul Schaefer. And I know about, um, Rosie O’Donnell.”

Armstrong went on to add that while researching for the book, she learned that Steve Buscemi was also in the running.

Larry David, who was one of the masterminds behind “Seinfeld,” went on to create another hit show called “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” And with that, he ended up bringing the cast back for a reunion on the seventh season of the HBO comedy.

However, Alexander was fearful that the reunion wouldn’t go well.

“Initially, I had concerns that a reunion show wouldnโ€™t be a good thing to do, or a fun thing to do. We hadnโ€™t worked as a group in 10 years. So weโ€™re all 10 years older,” the actor said in the 2025 book,ย No Lessons Learned: The Making of Curb Your Enthusiasm as Told by Larry David and the Cast and Crew.

“So the first thing Iโ€™m thinking is, ‘What was barely charming on characters in their 30s and 40s may be completely devoid of charm in their 40s and 50s, and that may be a mistake,” he continued, but said that it ultimately all worked out.

“The ensemble feeling that we had, the affection that we had for each other, it was immediate,” he concluded, calling it “a time tunnel.”
