Former ‘The Voice’ Contestant Makes History

A former contestant on “The Voice” has made history with his latest single, “20 Cigarettes.”

Morgan Wallen‘s latest No. 1 hit surged up the charts, making a lasting mark on his post-contestant career. The entertainer continues to remain a dominant force in the genre, but how has he made history?

How Did Morgan Wallen Make History?

According to Forbes, Morgan Wallen reached his sixth No. 1 with the song, “20 Cigarettes. The tune is the singer and songwriter’s sixth No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart to come from his “I’m the Problem” album.

The success of the single “20 Cigarettes” makes Wallen the first country music artist to land six No. 1 songs from two consecutive albums, reports Billboard.

The industry paper writes, “Produced by Joey Moi and written by Chris LaCorte, Chase McGill, Josh Miller and Blake Pendergrass, the track is the sixth Country Airplay leader from Wallen’s 2025 LP ‘I’m the Problem,’ following ‘I Got Better,’ ‘Just in Case,’ ‘Love Somebody’ and ‘Lies Lies Lies.’ He also logged six leaders from 2023’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ — and becomes the first artist to achieve the feat twice.”

Wallen’s 2023 LP “One Day at a Time” spawned the hits “You Proof,” “Thought You Should Know,” “Last Night,” “Thinking About Me,” “Man Made a Bar,” and “Cowgirls.”

Additionally, the entertainer is now the 13th artist or act with 20 or more No. 1s behind chart leaders Kenny Chesney (33), former “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton (30), and Tim McGraw (29), Billboard reports.

What Season Did Morgan Wallen Appear on ‘The Voice’?

Morgan Wallen was a competitor on “The Voice” during season 6. He originally competed on Team Usher before being stolen by coach Adam Levine.

Sadly, Wallen was eliminated during his season’s playoffs. However, in retrospect, he believes not going further on the TV series helped his career.

In 2019, the singer spoke to PEOPLE and shared his thoughts about his time on the reality singing series. He revealed that his mother signed him up as a competitor, claiming, “I didn’t even know what ‘The Voice’ was.”

“They wanted me to sing pop music, and I wanted to sing country music,” Wallen continued to PEOPLE. “But it was a big first step — I guess that’s the first time in my life where I realized that maybe I actually have a shot at this.”

He concluded, “I’m thankful for that time. I’m thankful for how it all turned out,” he says. “And honestly, I’m thankful that I didn’t win because it gave me a chance to take a couple of years after that show and really figure out who I was as an artist and get the right team around me. When I got there, I had no clue what I was doing.”

“The Voice” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. New episodes air the next day on Peacock.
