Everything You Didn’t See on the Premiere of ‘Survivor 50’ – Deleted Scenes & Behind-the-Scenes Footage

Last week, the unprecedented three-hour premiere of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” gave CBS its most successful Wednesday night in four years as more than 60 million viewers tuned in to watch 24 former castaways return to the island for another shot at claiming the title of “Sole Survivor.”

While “Survivor” producers like Jeff Probst and Matt Van Wagenen did a great job of condensing four full days of footage into the 180-minute episode – including the elimination of fan favorite castaway Jenna Lewis-Dougherty at the season’s first Tribal Council ceremony, and the medical evacuation of “Survivor 48” champion Kyle Fraser after he suffered a devastating injury during the installment’s inaugural Immunity Challenge – countless hours of footage from the premiere episode were left on the cutting room floor.

Thankfully, a massive contingency of press outlets who joined the “Survivor 50” cast on location in Fiji for the first three days of the game have taken to social media in the days following the premiere, revealing everything fans didn’t get to see.

From behind the scenes footage released by outlets like Entertainment Weekly and Parade, to deleted scenes released by CBS in the days following the historic debut of the golden anniversary season, here’s everything you didn’t get to see on the premiere of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans.”

Angelina Keeley Negotiates with Jeff Probst for Better Reward

During her debut appearance on “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” in 2018, castaway Angelina Keeley quickly established herself as one of the bravest – and most brazen – negotiators the franchise has since in its 26 years on the air.

While Angelina infamously negotiated for extra rice for her tribe on her original season, behind the scenes footage courtesy of Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross showed that Keeley was back to her old ways just hours into “Survivor 50.”

The clip showed Angelina speaking to Jeff Probst after her Vatu Tribe placed second in the season’s first Immunity Challenge. As a result of their victory, Vatu was rewarded with not only a reprieve from attending the installment’s inaugural Tribal Council ceremony, but also with a small set of fishing gear.

Keeley, having noted that the Vatu camp was far from a prime spot for fishing, attempted to convince Probst to trade in the meager prize for a singular tarp instead.

With the castaways just three days into the 26-day game, however, Probst wasn’t in the mood for haggling. While he conceded that he wasn’t surprised that Keeley was sticking her neck out this early in the season, his response was  firm and unequivocal: “I got nothing for ya.”

Probst later opened up about the moment in an interview with Parade, saying, “I should have been better prepared. [Angelina] caught me off guard. But I love it, and I love that Angelina is sincere. She’s not doing it as a joke. She literally thought that maybe she could persuade me to give her a tarp instead of fishing gear, knowing full well a tarp is its own different reward. It’s too early for that. But I gotta give her credit, man, you don’t know unless you ask.”

Christian Hubicki Formulates Plan to Eliminate Ozzy Lusth

A deleted scene released by CBS after the premiere episode showed the Cila Tribe waking up on the morning of the fourth day of the competition still reeling from Jenna Lewis-Dougherty’s elimination.

While some players, like Emily Flippen, were disconcerted over the decision to blindside Jenna, others, like Christian Hubicki, Joe Hunter, Rick Devens and Savannah Louie, were already plotting their next strike.

Regardless of their thoughts on the season’s first elimination, however, the five castaways discussed the threat posed by their remaining tribemates Ozzy Lusth and Cirie Fields.

“Ozzy and Cirie have a relationship,” said Emily in the deleted scene, adding, “They’re getting too close and we have to nip this in the bud. You don’t want a tight pair in this game.”

Cirie, ever the master strategist, senses that she and Ozzy are on the outs and encourages Lusth to make nice with Christian – the so-called “Puppet Master” of the Cila Tribe – in an attempt to worm their way back into the majority alliance’s good graces.

Given the nature of the deleted scene, it’s surprising that it didn’t make it into the episode, especially as the early morning conversation could have major implications for Cirie and Ozzy moving forward.

Cirie Fields’ Challenge Flop Went on for (at Least) 20 Minutes

Speaking of Cirie Fields, one of the most memorable moments from the fifth-time player’s “Survivor 50” return was her abysmal performance in the season’s first Immunity Challenge.

Cirie’s fumble in the challenge, which earned her tribe a one way ticket to Tribal Council, reportedly went on much, much longer than was shown on screen.

According to Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross, who was on-location for the duration of the premiere’s filming, “Cirie on the monkey’s fist stage took forrrrrrrrrrrrevvvvvvvvvver. (Maybe like 20 minutes?)”

Ross continued, revealing, “The second all of us saw Cirie had volunteered for that crucial spot, we were super confused as to why. The reason she raised her hand for the thing that ultimately doomed the tribe was that she had experience doing it on ‘Australian Survivor,’ so was confident she could execute it here. What threw her (slight pun intended) is that there was no rope wall in front of her in that ‘Australian Survivor’ challenge.”

Speaking further on the blunder in an interview with Parade, Jeff Probst added, “Why they put Cirie on that part when she could have been gathering coconuts? No idea. But now you gotta pay for it. And now Cirie’s on a beach somewhere going, ‘Am I first out? Am I a liability, exposed by the show I love so much?’”

“Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” will return to CBS screens nationwide on Wednesday, March 4 at 8:00pm ET.
