As the season 4 winner of “American Idol” and a current judge on the show, Carrie Underwood has the unique perspective of experiencing both sides of the table. The singer says that she sees “glimpses” of herself in those wide-eyed contestants.
Carrie Underwood Sees Her Younger Self in the ‘American Idol’ Contestants
During a March 24 interview with “Good Morning America,” Underwood was asked about her experience judging after being a contestant on “American Idol.”
“Is there somebody on this season that reminds you of a young Carrie?” host Lara Spencer asked.
“Every once in a while, I’ll see glimpses — and it doesn’t really necessarily have to do with style,” Underwood answered.
The country star noted, “Just seeing all these wide-eyed youngsters coming up on stage, and it’s like they’re in this whole new world. People are voting for them and they’re on live TV.”
“I definitely see glimpses of myself,” she added.
“I told Hannah Harper that she reminded me of me, and she’s got her own style going on,” the “Idol” judge continued.
“I didn’t mean it in a vocal way at all. But just in that, you know, you’re living your normal life, and then now you’re on stage. And she just seemed nervous and I just remember being up there thinking like, ‘What do I do on this stage?'” Underwood added.
Underwood Gave Hannah Harper Solid Performance Advice
On the March 16 episode of “American Idol,” Harper performed “Ain’t No Grave” by Bethel Music and Molly Skaggs.
Underwood told the young singer that the performance reminded her of her own time on “American Idol.”
“I would be on stage, I’d look out, and I’d be like, ‘What are you doing out there hand?’ All of a sudden, things would kind of start falling apart because I’d start thinking about what I was doing,” she explained.
Underwood advised, “Try not to. Just tell the story and don’t worry about what any of this is doing. I feel like we got some glimpses of that, and it’s awesome.”
During a March 24 appearance on “The View,” the singer was asked if her kids are interested in following in her musical footsteps.
“They both can sing, but my oldest is like super into his music,” Underwood revealed. “He’s a mini-me in so many ways … but I don’t think I would. He would need to be older and more established in himself before I would give my blessing on getting in the music business.”
