One director made Chainsaw Man legendary. He is back.
Wistoria: Wand and Sword was one of the most quietly impressive fantasy anime of 2024. Now it returns for Season 2 on Crunchyroll on April 12, and for fans who already know the show, the biggest reason for excitement is not the new arc or the new themes. It is the returning creative team that helped make this spring one of the strongest anime seasons in recent memory.
If Season 1 flew under your radar, here is everything you need before Sunday.
Where Season 1 Left Off and Why It Matters
Will Serfort cannot use magic. In a world where sorcery determines status, that makes him an outsider at Rigarden Magic Academy — dismissed by students and faculty alike. His only weapon is his sword, and his only goal is to reach the Magia Vander, the five most powerful mages alive, to stand beside his childhood friend, Elfaria, who has already ascended to that rank.
Season 1 built Will’s journey through the academy’s brutal trials before escalating into a dungeon expedition turned crisis. Hostile mages disrupted the exam, and under pressure, Will unlocked a new ability called Wis — allowing him to absorb and redirect magical energy through his sword. Season 1 ended there. The stakes were raised, the questions were left open, and the audience that found Wistoria in 2024 has been waiting two years for this.
What Season 2 Brings to Crunchyroll
Season 2 covers two arcs directly from the manga: the Graduation Finals Arc and the Blooming Festival Arc, picking up immediately after the Season 1 cliffhanger. New rivals emerge, old relationships shift, and the academy’s political tensions grow considerably sharper. The production structure has been updated, with Season 1’s director Tatsuya Yoshihara moving to chief director and Hideaki Nakano stepping in as series director.
Yoshihara’s continued involvement deserves more attention than it is getting. He directed Chainsaw Man Season 1 and the Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc film, which is widely considered one of the best anime films in recent years, in large part because of his direction. His presence over Wistoria Season 2 is a creative guarantee. The fluid action choreography and stunning visual language from Season 1 are not going anywhere. The new opening theme is “BELIEVERS” by ASH DA HERO, and the ending theme is “Reachlight” by Shiyui.
Quick Facts Before Sunday
- Wistoria is written by Fujino Omori, the author behind Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
- Season 1 adapted only the first 20 chapters of the manga, which is already over 60 chapters deep — the anime has a long runway ahead.
- The series earned a 7.85 on MyAnimeList after Season 1, strong for a new fantasy title in a crowded genre.
- A Season 2 renewal was confirmed immediately after the Season 1 finale — the studio never had doubts.
- The returning voice cast is fully intact, with Kouhei Tenzaki back as Will Serfort.
Wistoria Season 2 arrives with something most sequels cannot claim: the same creative hands that built what worked the first time.
The Chainsaw Man director does not make quiet anime.
