‘Mystic Pizza’ Actor Passes Away After Decades-Long Career – He Will Be Missed

John Cunningham, an incredible actor whose career spanned Broadway as well as film, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, at his home in New York, the family announced in an online obituary. He was 93 years old.

His wife of nearly 70 years was by his side, holding his hand at the time of his passing, according to his obituary. Along with her, he is survived by his three children, Christopher, Catherine, and Laura, as well as his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, it says.

He is remembered as a “respected and much-loved working actor of stage, screen, and television for nearly 70 years,” the obituary says.


John Cunningham’s Legacy

Cunningham’s passion for performing began when he joined the U.S. Army and performed for troops. Afterwards, he attended Yale Drama School for his master’s degree and then moved to New York to pursue a career, according to his obituary.

He was 27 years old when he landed a role in the national and international company of “My Fair Lady,” the obituary says. But it was in 1963 when he made his Broadway debut in the musical “Hot Spot,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Throughout the years, he held many other roles, including originating the roles of Nikos in “Zorba,” Peter in “Company,” Flan in “Six Degrees of Separation,” Nicholas in “The Sisters Rosensweig,” and Captain Smith in “Titanic,” according to his obituary. He also performed in numerous off-Broadway productions, it says.

“In theater you get to do it again, and again, and again,” he detailed in a 1997 interview with Playbill. “My whole pleasure is trying to get better.”

As for film, Cunningham had many roles, including as Mr. Windsor, the father of Adam Storke and Matt Damon’s characters in “Mystic Pizza” as well as Ethan Hawke’s dad in the “Dead Poets Society.” Other films he was in include “The Big Fix,” “For Love or Money,” and “The Jackal” along with others.

He also made some appearances in iconic television shows such as “Law and Order” and “30 Rock,” as well as working on soap operas including “The Secret Storm,” “The Doctors,” “Search for Tomorrow,” and “One Life to Live and Loving.”


Broadway Actor Pays Tribute to John Cunningham

Broadway actor John Bolton posted a sweet tribute for Cunningham following the news of his passing.

“The great John Cunningham has left us. John was a Broadway legend who led our Titanic company with passion, professionalism, laughter, tears, kindness and steak dinners, all with the spark-eyed saltiness of an actual sea captain. O Captain: the honor was all ours,” he wrote on Instagram. “John Cunningham 1932-2026.”
