Country Stars Pay Tribute to John Wesley Ryles, 74: ‘We Lost a Legend & a Friend’

The country music world is paying tribute to John Wesley Ryles, who died at age 74 in the early hours of November 2, according to Heart of Texas Records, as reported by The Daily Mail. The acclaimed singer’s cause of death has not been made public.

Born in Bastrop, Louisiana, Ryles showed musical promise early on, performing gospel songs with his family on local radio programs in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

At just 17, he signed with Columbia Records and released his breakout single, “Kay,” which became a defining hit and marked the beginning of his long career in country music.

Known for his rich vocals and heartfelt storytelling, Ryles went on to record a series of beloved songs, solidifying his reputation as one of Nashville’s most distinctive voices. His passing leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of country artists and fans alike.

A Voice That Defined Generations

Ryles’ deep, soulful voice led to a string of country classics, including “Once in a Lifetime Thing,” “Fool,”Louisiana Rain,” and “Liberated Woman.” His final single, “Nobody Knows,” was released in 1988.

Beyond his solo success, Ryles became one of Nashville’s most sought-after harmony singers, contributing vocals to countless country records throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Country artist Mark Wills paid tribute to Ryles on Instagram.

He wrote, “We lost a GIANT in the music industry today. John Wesley Ryles sang more harmonies on records, that to the listener, sounded like the artist themselves! He could blend with ANYBODY! John sang on my first four records and always had a flawless blend with the lead vocal. It was perfect.”

Family & Personal Legacy

Ryles was married to Joni Lee Ryles, daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member Conway Twitty. The two met through the industry and toured together in 1969 during Twitty’s European run.

Ryles’ nephew remembered him in a heartfelt Facebook post: “He was married to my Aunt Joni, and we all loved him like blood. He was an amazing singer, and artist, and an even more amazing man. He had several hits as a solo artist and was an A-team harmony singer in Nashville for decades.”

Fans Remember a True Country Soul

Tributes from fans flooded social media, remembering Ryles as an underappreciated great. “So sad. I still listen to his songs ‘Kay’ and ‘Fool,’” one fan wrote. “He was never given the recognition he deserved, in my opinion.”

Another added, “He sang on my first two albums and crushed it! Def one of a kind.”

Another tribute read: “Oh man. I’m so sorry to hear this, man. Sorry, your loss, Mark. I’ve seen his name and heard him on record for years, but I never got to work with him; I knew his legend for sure. God bless his family.”

A fan shared: “Gene Watson told us the same thing about JWR as he sang on a few with Gene also. So very sorry for the loss of another icon in country music 😢”

As the industry reflects on his contributions, Ryles is being remembered not only as a hitmaker but as the voice behind countless beloved country songs that defined an era.
