Beloved Pop Singer Ends Her Marriage & Starts New Chapter

Christina Perri, best known for her 2011 hit singles “Jar of Hearts” and “A Thousand Years,” has filed for divorce from her husband Paula Costabile after seven years of marriage. People says the 39-year-old shares two young daughters with her ex, whom she married in 2017. The couple embraced an unconventional theme that perfectly paired with Perri’s gothic aesthetic.

The report says the filing, which hit the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, on Monday, Nov. 3, lists “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the breakup. It also says Perri requested joint physical and legal custody of the children, and that her ex not be awarded spousal support. The exes did sign a prenuptial agreement, per the story.

The couple’s last joint red carpet appearance was possibly at the Paley Center for Media’s premiere of “Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion” at Directors Guild Of America on May 13, 2024.

Which ‘Switched at Birth’ Episode Is ‘Jar of Hearts’ In?

The song “Jar of Hearts” was featured in Season 1: Episode 4 of the ABC Family drama “Switched at Birth,” which stars Lea Thompson as the mother of a pair of teen girls, Bay and Daphne, who were accidentally switched at birth by the hospital. The emotional song, which is nearing half a billion plays on YouTube, is played by Toby’s band as Bay leaves a party with Ty Mendosa, a family friend of Daphne and her mother. The moment is emotional for Daphne because of her long history with Ty and complicated feelings about seeing Bay step into the life she “should have had.”

The episode is where many of Perri’s fans discovered her and the song.

Christina Perri Previously Told Meredith Vieira How She Wrote ‘Jar of Hearts’

Back in 2015, Perri hit “The Meredith Vieira Show” and talked about the writing process for her biggest hit. She recalled, “I wrote it on December 26 of 2009. I was in my pajamas, and I was in my parents’ house cause I was home for Christmas.”

The Pennsylvania revealed that creating the hit marked the day she finally realized she was over “the guy I had been dating off and on for six years.” She called the former relationship “very unhealthy.” She added, “He called me, and I said no. And I meant it, for the first time.” Perri says the song is about strength, and that the lyrics and melody came to her simultaneously as she worked it out on her guitar. “You don’t get to get me back is the theme of that song,” she concluded.
