Lea Thompson Looks Back at Her Iconic Role in ‘Caroline in the City’

Hallmark’s Lea Thompson has had an extensive career spanning four decades. From Lorraine Baines in “Back to the Future” to Kathryn Kennish in “Switched at Birth,” she’s had numerous roles that fans consider their favorites. But for many, it’s her character, cartoonist Caroline Duffy from “Caroline in the City.”

On September 23, “The Chicken Sisters” star posted a nostalgic Instagram post. She reminisced about how long it had been since the sitcom aired.

“Caroline in the City is 30,” she captioned the post. “How can I be 37?” To accompany the photos, she shared facts from the show that she hadn’t mentioned before.

Lea Thompson is Grateful for the Memories

The first photo, taken from the pilot, shows Thompson in character at a drafting table with a cat perched on top. “When we shot the pilot I had just given birth to Zoey Deutch and couldn’t wait to get back to her to breastfeed. You can tell in this photo,” she wrote, referencing what appeared to be a wet spot on her blouse.

The next photo is taken from Season 1, when she and Malcolm Gets’ character, Richard, kiss. She remarked that they even won a TV Guide Best Kiss Award for the scene.

Next is a promotional image of Thompson and Amy Pietz, who played her best friend, Annie. “Amy Pietz is not only the best actress ever she’s still my bestie,” she captioned it.

The next photo seemed to hold a bittersweet memory for Thompson, as in the middle of filming the second episode of “Caroline in the City,” her dad died. The “Next Stop, Christmas” actress rarely talks about her dad, but occasionally she posts photos of him on social media.

The next photo depicted her character with a lollipop in her mouth, standing in front of a poster featuring a Lolita. “I couldn’t believe they put a Lolita poster in a grown woman’s apartment,” she wrote. “I made them replace it the second year with an Elvis poster.”

The following Season 4 photo showed her and her castmates on a stage wearing glamorous showgirl costumes. “Yes. This happened,” she captioned. In the scene captured, she was daydreaming about what her life would be like as a chorus girl.

A photo from a scene showcasing their TV aquarium was next, followed by Thompson’s appreciation for having had the opportunity to be on the show.

‘Caroline in the City’ Pressures & the Dream of Directing

Thompson has called her time on “Caroline in the City” a learning experience, and that, if it hadn’t been canceled, she would’ve started directing episodes in the fifth season. However, she also described the show as “a massive amount” of pressure.

“I had never even seen a sitcom being filmed,” she previously admitted to Parade. “I didn’t know how hard it was to do it in front of an audience and just the pressure of telling jokes and literally having the best time slot in the history of television. We were in between “Seinfeld” and “ER.” It was insane.”
