’80s Country Music Star’s Widow Shares Heartbreaking Tribute 1 Month After His Passing

Raul Malo, the lead singer for the beloved music group The Mavericks, tragically passed away on December 8. His widow, Betty Malo, shared a touching tribute, marking one month without her husband.

“Today marks a month of Mondays. A month since Raul transitioned to the afterlife. I miss my husband. I miss my best friend,” she captioned a video clip from the singer’s funeral, which she shared via Instagram on Monday, January 5.

Betty Malo Remembers Her Late Country Singer Husband

Betty, who shares three sons, Dino, Victor, and Max, with the late singer, is mourning the loss of her husband.

“What I miss the most is listening to him—tinkering on his guitars, finding his way on the piano, chasing melodies only he could hear,” she continued on Monday. “The house remembers him. The dogs do too. Everyone around us feels his absence—especially our three sons, who carry his music, his humor, and his heart forward every day.”

She added, “I’m sharing this video from that day, as his band, sons, and the people who loved him took him to the crematorium—surrounded by love, and gratitude for a life that will never stop echoing. I miss you so much [Raul Malo] and love you deeper and deeper each day that goes by. #papi”

The couple was married for 32 years after eloping in Chicago in 1992.

Raul Passed Away After a Battle With Cancer

The band was forced to cancel all of their shows after Raul was diagnosed with colon cancer in June 2024.

“It’s important to surround yourself with as much love and support as possible. Psychology is an integral part of your physical state. I thought I had everything under control,” he shared in a June 2025 update.

Raul tragically passed away at age 60.

“At 8:52 pm on December 8th, 2025, my love… our boys’ father… a devoted son and brother… and a friend to so many, gained his angel wings,” Betty wrote in a statement on Malo’s official Facebook page. “He was called to do another gig — this time in the sky — and he’s flying high like an eagle. No one embodied life and love, joy and passion, family, friends, music, and adventure the way our beloved Raul did. Now he will look down on us with all that heaven will allow, lighting the way and reminding us to savor every moment. Dino, Victor, Max and I — along with our entire family — thank all of you for your love and support through all of this. We felt every bit of it. In Raul’s own words: ‘Muchísimas gracias.'”
